A Covid variant that the vaccine is 40 percent less effective against
Along with what is happening in Europe and the cold snap we are about to endure over the weekend it is not looking too good
I hope I am wrong

One of the lead investigators of the new variant has told the BBC that the virus is "transmitting at great speed" in parts of South Africa.

We will be up excrement estuary minus an oar if it takes hold in the uk then in light of the amount of people I am seeing out and about who are not wearing a mask where and when required
Stickybottle, well just maybe England should have stuck with wearing face masks in shops, public transport etc as Drakeford insisted on in Wales. I was there last week and it's startling how they adhere to social distancing etc compared to here in England.
Let me be clear that I'm not saying that the insistence on wearing face masks etc is having a direct result on covid cases in Wales. What I am saying is that for those concerned that mask wearing is of benefit to keep safe from covid, mask wearing, social distancing etc have to be diminishing the fear.
First case in Belgium ( Quarantine)
and one case in quarantine gave it to someone across the corridor....

BUT - in Oz, where they are innovators, one outbreak started as sexually transmitted. ( Whaaaaaat?). Everyone got bored and the security guard er kissed one of the quaranteenies.

Just trying to er keep up interest on the third page
It's happening all over again. Only two cases at the moment but travel restrictions won't begin properly until Monday??Then we start again with the quarantine in hotels . Just like last time there is too long a delay between travellers being allowed to come in and the actual quaranting. How many of those returning will be bringing the new variant into the UK?
"Just like last time there is too long a delay between travellers being allowed to come in and the actual quaranting

Well, no there isn't because this time quarantining will start immedately flights begin again.
It won't be possible to keep this out of the UK, but the longer it is kept at bay the better.
Yeah I wondered about that Andres - - we have to wait and see ( again ) and people have to be sensible. I have to say now - if someone asked me to quarantine for ten days, I wd probably take it seriously

( a neighbour's wife made him eat off a tin plate in his bedroom for ten days ! - no kissy kissy either !)
//"transmitting at great speed" in parts of South Africa.//

That's why they called it the Gnu variant then. I Gnever Gnew they were that quick mind. Good job it isn't the vaccine Cheetah.
//Dutch health authorities said that 61 people who arrived in Amsterdam on two flights from South Africa on Friday tested positive for Covid-19, Reuters reports.

Authorities are conducting further testing to see if any of the infections are with the recently discovered Omicron coronavirus variant.

Around 600 passengers arrived at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on the two KLM flights on Friday and then faced hours of delays and testing due to concerns over the new virus variant.

The Dutch health ministry said early onn Saturday 61 tests had come back positive.

“Travellers with a positive test result will be placed in isolation at a hotel at or near Schiphol,” health authorities said in a statement. “Of the positive test results, we are researching as quickly as possible whether they are the new variant of concern, now named ‘Omicron’.”//

That is a worry.

Such a shame they’ve not called it the Nu variant!
Maybe Nu is a reserved word.
When we almost reach the end of these there’ll be a Psi of relief.
Morning Peter P if and when you see this :-)
//Sajid Javid says there are two cases of the variant of concern that have been identified in the UK, one in Chelmsford and one in Nottingham.//
Sky News.
Just reading about an admission that all the cases suffering from the "new variant" have very mild symptoms and no discomfort. The hope is, I suppose, that the new strain of death and suffering is actually no such thing ... but a virus rinsing and repeating to an influenza or common cold type affliction. Hope so.
For anyone who did not see it here is the Prime Minister's announcement regarding the latest variant. Precise and concise ... Bojo is our rooster booster. No criticism from me, we are liable to be locked up in Wales if the control feaks stay true to form.

Just a post for our crossword fans. Have you noticed that the new and excitingly named "Omicron" strain is an anagram of Moronic?

I was a leedol disappointed that Savid Jaffi said - oh we knew about this last night....

long interview during the say with a professor who said that people would co operate with behavioural limitation so long as they were motivated
Not a great fan of Andy Burnham but he is spot on when he says mask wearing on transport and in shops should never have been stopped.
Vroom Vroom.
Peppa pig....

Yeah, OK?
have readers noticed that Omicron Pie ( oh my kron) in those days was the Att-gen in the first volume of Trollope's ecclesiastical novels.

Sir Omicron Pie was delayed in giving advice, because of the passage of the 156 clauses of the anti catholic bill which outlawed romish articles and worship in the Church of England. It also empowered sages femmes in any parish entering a religious houses and asking those therein if they were held against their will. See the real public worship act 1876
The lady in saarfefreeka is doing sterling work.

"" Antibodies protect against viruses by gumming them up and preventing them from infecting human cells. To do so, they must recognise particular parts of the virus. Most Covid antibodies latch on to one of three sites on the virus, but all are mutated in Omicron, meaning antibodies produced by vaccines or past infection may be significantly less effective.

Prof Penny Moore at the University of the Witwatersrand and the National Institute for Communicable Disease in South Africa said “pseudoviruses” – harmless, non-replicating viruses used to model coronavirus variants – will be engineered to carry Omicron’s mutations. These will then be exposed to antibody-carrying blood plasma from vaccinated people and those who have recovered from Covid infection to see if they neutralise the virus.""

Hmm. More "theories" to consider.

""Many scientists posit that this new variant is related to the HIV epidemic hitting South Africa. One out of five adults in the country have HIV/AIDS, with over 7.7 million people living with the condition. Given the large number of mutations it has accumulated, apparently in a single burst,» director Francois Balloux, of the University College of London Genetics Institute says, «it likely evolved during a chronic infection of an immunocompromised person, possibly in an untreated HIV/AIDS patient. ""

That line made me sit up and take notice ""One out of five adults in the country have HIV/AIDS, with over 7.7 million people living with the condition."" Were you aware of that? I certainly don't remember the health authorities ever flagging up that information, not our health service or National Broadcaster, and certainly not the Government Health Ministers from any administration. ... Still they come.
