…You have to rely on the Labour Party to save your blushes.
Nearly 100 Tories revolt and do not support their own Government.
Clearly a party deeply divided.
I wonder what the people of Shropshire North are making of tonights shenanigans ?

//There are always policies that, if voters of any hue are honest, they are reluctant to support - but the alternative right now is far worse so compromise is called for.//

Of course there will always be some of a party’s policies that a voter may not agree with, naomi. But the idea that you “must” vote for someone, regardless, is not one I subscribe to. If there’s nobody I can truly support then nobody gets my vote. It’s too valuable to fritter away of the least unattractive option and, at present, none of the options are at all attractive. If enough people vote to elect an alternative to this current omnishambles then so be it.
gromit, in your heart of hearts who do you think will be the PM after the 2024 GE?
NJ, // If there’s nobody I can truly support then nobody gets my vote. It’s too valuable to fritter away of the least unattractive option//

It has no value at all if you don't use it - even as a protest vote. You just become a voiceless irrelevance - a nonentity.

TTT,
The Conservative Party leader.
we could always change the voting system so that people are secure to vote for the things they actually believe in... something worth campaigning for!!
//we could always change the voting system//

I will never vote again unless/until we get some meaningful form of PR. 500 or so constituencies might just as well give it to the incumbent party without the expense of holding a poll.
//but is it abstaining the answer? I don't think so.//

We will have to beg to differ there. Like I said earlier I will not vote for a donkey with a blue rosette on.

And I will be able to complain as there was no one to vote for.
YMB. Shrug. See my post at 10:04.
well to be honest it has all been very messy recently i am surprised any of them can be all for one party or person right now
He is a lame duck PM assuredly.
The wish by at least one Tory MP that the Conservatives should lose the by-election on Thursday as it will give Johnson a kick in the pants and make him "shape up" or whatever is understandable, but forlorn.
Johnson is what he is: he'll never change.
davebro: "I will never vote again unless/until we get some meaningful form of PR." - there is no meaningful form of PR, all it does is produce coalitions.
Imagine how awful it would be if politicians tried to work together :/

It is awful jim. Across a section of any society there will be many differing views with groups forming with similar notions as to what should be done.

If all politicians agreed then many people would not be represented. Which is what is happening now.
I wasn't being entirely serious. Coalitions can lead to messy compromise where nobody gets what they want, so it isn't necessarily ideal either. On the other hand, the present approach is brilliant for only a minority, and an increasingly small one at that, because it inflates the scale of victory (or, at least, often has the potential to, eg the 1997 Election).
//It has no value at all if you don't use it...//

It has no value to me until I have somebody to vote for. I don't even have anybody to choose as a "protest" vote at present. It is no value to politicians unless I use it. The ideal result of an election for me at the moment would be a zero turnout. Unfortunately that would mean the current government continuing in power (as far as I am aware) but I can't do much about that. The notion that I must vote for somebody I don't find in the least bit acceptable is not something I will agree to. If there's nobody good enough to choose, I will choose nobody. That may lump me in with all those who do not vote because they simply cannot be bothered, but I'll have to live with that.
I don't think coalitions are a bad thing... single party rule is not a magic way to ensure good decisions...

As I've many times before (not on AB) Capitalism is Crisis.. No Future!

As I've also said before (here on AB) I don't discuss 'politics'.

What I will say is, the current system is broken.. there must be a better way for all of us to PROGRESS towards a brighter future.

I do not have a party to vote for, none exist, I would have to start my own. I guess we should vote it's our duty in a democracy. ANY result is a compromise purely due to how the system is set up.
I'd agree, coalition governments result in more compromises.

I would conclude, to me with my optimistic hat on.. there could not be a worse government than the current one.. the odds must be likely that the next one will be capable of making things better..!!??
As I've *said many..
Roobaba: 2I would conclude, to me with my optimistic hat on.. there could not be a worse government than the current one.. the odds must be likely that the next one will be capable of making things better..!!?? " - possibly but do you think they've had a fair crack at being the government in normal times? Almost immediately after the 2019 election it's been crises all the way.
