New Year's Eve plans in England have been given the green light, as Sajid Javid confirmed the government will not be imposing any further restrictions before the New Year.

There's only one reason Boris made this decision, and its nothing to do with the infection rate. He is trying to score brownie points after all the bad press.
//I must side with the chief gonk//

Can't think who or what this refers to!

The bloke who combs his hair with a balloon. :))
THECORBYLOON: "NJ, it doesn't help that not all data are updated or measured in the same manner by each of the four nations. " - an unfortunate side effect of the disastrous devolution. Something as important as a pandemic should be handled by the UK government for the whole UK and would have been prior to devolution. I think a lot of decisions being made in the minor nations are based on belligerence rather than any sort of operational logic.
Quite right Kardashev
Devolved government only highlights its total waste in the whole of this pandemic
Probably the right decision. The main things that can go wrong:

1) hospital admissions are too much OR
2) too many hospital staff or other key workers are off sick at the same time

Either of which would be a big problem.
You could ask another question. Was it the right decision to make 10 + years of cutbacks within the NHS? Without doubt the answer must be no, if we can't cope with 9k + sick people, and everything else within the NHS comes to a standstill.

We use to have another poster who use to say Boris was trying to score brownie points whenever he did something that was well recieved. Eh-oh.
It appears that more than a qarter of current covid cases in our hospitals were admitted for something else and contracted it in hospital. Have we been here before with our hospitals and their cleaning and hygiene regimes? Never mind protect the hospitals from us, protect us from the hospitals.
Togo, cleaning contracts given to cowboy companies, employing low paid cleaners who could care a toss due to the lack of a living wage.
Definitely the right decision. I don't think people are taking into account the negatives of lockdowns and restrictions for so many people. We only seem to be shown covid stats... and everyone else is just collateral damage.

Are there numbers given for elderly people, with dementia especially, who have just stopped eating and given up, after the lack of visitors? They may not be able to always articulate what they need, but this has happened far more over the last year, from the experience of friends and relatives.
Also businesses, and other illnesses... I'm isolating at the moment, which is fine for me. But does affect others quite badly. Is anyone counting these?
Face the truth bobb, how on earth could he turn round and tell people they couldn't "party" this year.
13.30 Those numbers will always be hidden, out of sight (for many) and out of mind, and who is going to prove otherwise. There is mega suffering out there, at all levels.
Yes, it is the right decision.

More nonsense incoming from the far left. The "cleaners" are not tending to broken bones and treating heart attack admissions. Nor do they change beds, clean down beds, or see to patient hygiene. The tens of thousands of "management" parasites don't either.
Teapots, usually by giving one side only... to try to make everyone else look like savage granny-killers. But, they don't actually want to hear from Granny.
Imv, they are the most selfish- because they want everyone to behave and think like they do, and refuse to take different circumstances into account.
Looks like we can cut the cleaners then according to you? Hygiene starts from the floor upwards.
It's airborne.
