If they had increased the required nominations to 120, there would be a maximum of two candidates and that would have removed the need for MPs to have a vote.
That might have looked like a stitch up ;-)
Or maybe 120 would ha e been too much for one candidate
Personally I’m astounded they’re letter the members loose in it again.
What was that definition of madness?!
I suspect it won’t come to that
Sounds a con to me. It was only offering the members 2 unsuitable candidates that caused problems last time. Let a dozen be offered. If time is of the essence use a transferable vote system.
Whoever is chosen is going to require the support of nearly a ⅓ of the Party with the figure of 100 votes being utilised as a screen. This figure was plucked out of the air this afternoon and is in contrast to the 20 votes that were a threshold in the summer dance. A maximum of 3 candidates could run if they get the requisite 100 nods from the 357 sitting Conservative MPs. Nominations to be put to a vote must be lodged by 2pm Monday 23rd to enter the hat. Who is going to nominate Boris? Everyone on the party? If it had been 120 "votes", as has been idiotically suggested, then only Boris could have been elected because no one else in the ranks could garner any such support. It will be an interesting weekend then.
Boris is indeed flying back to campaign and the latest info creeping out that was flagged up earlier this afternoon is, according to a Guido count ... Boris Johnson has 32 MPs gone public with support, Rishi Sunak has 21, and Penny Mordaunt — who also stood at the last competition — has nine.
Kemi Badenoch or Penny Mordaunt would be the candidates Keir Starmer would fear most. Either would make an excellent PM. The moment has passed for Boris and Rishi. But who knows who the Tories will choose. Shame Jeremy Hunt isn't running, he'll be hoping to keep that job as Chancellor, whoever becomes the next leader.
TOGO, "If it had been 120 "votes", as has been idiotically suggested, then only Boris could have been elected because no one else in the ranks could garner any such support."
At the last leadership election, these were Sunak's votes at the latter stages.
It’s highly likely only one candidate reaches 100+ - meaning an automatic coronation
If I was Graham Brady that’s what I’d be hoping I think.
The way they’ve set it up the actual election is very likely have taken place unofficially by the time nominations close
TOGO, the previous threshold for candidates to be considered was much lower (twenty nominations) and there were seven candidates who reached that figure.
As for the first and second ballots for Sunak, they were eighty-eight and 101 respectively.
