they did not want it to go to the members because he would lose

they will not call a general election because he would lose

so why is he there? in whose interests has this decision been made?

There have only been five Labour chancellor's in my lifetime, whereas the Tories have had four in 2022.
untitled: "They did not want it to go to the members because he would lose" - correct

"they will not call a general election because he would lose" - correct

"so why is he there? in whose interests has this decision been made? " - He's there because he won the leadership contest. The contest was part of the party mechanics it's not meant to be in anyone's "interest" it's a process we go through.
"There have only been five Labour chancellor's in my lifetime" - there have only been 4 Labour prime minsters in history.
And one of them sold all our gold at rock bottom prices. ^

But that doesn’t make sense.

Sunak demonstrated that he clearly HAD a clue during the race to become PM. He was the one who told Truss her unfunded tax cuts would lead to a run on the pound and interest rate hikes.

He said this several times!
Although I was all for him being PM a while back his back stabbing and un-Torylike policies of high tax, high spend and big Government really put me off him.

He did allude to them being Johnson, so we shall see but for the moment he is the best choice.

Go Rishi!
// electronic tags... Jeffrey Archer found himself in a spot of bother? //

Archer had long left the Commons by then.
// only been 4 Labour prime minsters in history. //

6 Surely.
"He's there because he won the leadership contest. The contest was part of the party mechanics it's not meant to be in anyone's "interest" it's a process we go through."

that's not an answer. whom does his leadership benefit if he would win with neither the members nor the general population?
Only four Labour PMs? MacDonald, Attlee, Wilson, Callaghan, Blair, Brown.
15:33, 2 of them were "new" Labour, essentially Tory lite, most don't count those as real Labour.
Blair was a Thatcherite for a start.
15.38 TTT. Spent so much time, being brain washed at the Tory school of radicalisation ,studying Conservatism , that they hadn't got time enough to teach him how to count. PMSL
"most don't count those as real Labour."

Since when have you and a few of your pals constituted "most"?

Can you post to a respected reference website which shows Blair and Brown as not being Labour Party Prime Ministers?
TTT only supported PM4PM because of her pearly whites.
///his back stabbing///

I don't recall you accusing Braverman of anything like that, ymb, you were praising her as being the sort of member a reformed Tory party would need to build around.

But she brought down Truss. Does that not count as back stabbing?
Zebu, the left like to claim New Labour is real Labour but in reality it was a product of Thatcherism. She forced the opposition to change and they realised that she was correct and did change to become electable. Sadly the reds under the bed have re infested the party and they are now back to the sort of content that last won an election in 1974. Gulliver is particularly sore because he hates MrsT but loves Tony Blair even though the former begat the latter.
