I think that the lady was asking where her family originated from. I think that is a genuine question, maybe not the time nor the place but it is hardly a major issue.

> I know someone elderly who would ask like this trying to hard to make conversation and not leave it hanging unrisolved... she has a bit of autism to and cant allways read peoples feelings /attitude .... maybe that applies in this case
If so, then by the time she's reached 83 years old someone should have worked out that she should not be representing the Royal Household at a Buckingham Palace charity event ...

How on earth is this racism?. Racism is when you look down on another race as inferior and no way was the lady-in-waiting doing that. The black woman looked as though she had just flown in from the Caribbean or Africa. Tribal dress and hair . Not a bit like someone born and bred over here.
In fact the reporter writing the article was more disrespectful when he referred to the woman by her surname .

It's difficult fo anyone here to judge, as we weren't present. It is quite possible that the Lady-in-waiting was just making conversation and was genuinely interested in where this person came from - i.e. her background, her life-story, her heritage. Or she could have been 'superior' or condescending, or somewhat aggressive or patronising. I suspect the former rather than the latter. But nowadays there's a lot of suspicion and mistrust about, and people take offence readily - not surprising in view of the online abuse that flies around all the time.
Slightly going off the topic here, but interesting how royalty pick godparents given the roll they are supposed to fulfil in Christian traditions.
According to Wikipedia
William had six godparents: former King Constantine II of Greece (his paternal second cousin once removed); Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Mrs Ogilvy (his paternal first cousin twice removed); the Duchess of Westminster; Lady Susan Hussey; Lord Romsey (his paternal second cousin once removed); and Sir Laurens van der Post.

The late Queen's lady-in-waiting Lady Susan Hussey has apologised and resigned after she repeatedly asked a black British charity boss where she was "really" from. Ngozi Fulani, a charity founder ... said she was "totally stunned" by Prince William's godmother's comments.
The palace described the remarks as "unacceptable and deeply regrettable". A spokesperson for Prince William said "racism has no place in our society". "The comments were unacceptable, and it is right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect," they said.
What more to say, really? It was a mistake, she's apologised and paid for it.

fender, at this rate such reactions will sound the death knell for all Royal gatherings, including the garden parties. Just how minute does small talk have to be in the future? Should Lady Hussey have mentioned I'm a Celebrity... that would have caused offence by the mention of "jungle", no doubt. Heaven help us all.
