Is it because of their ingrained desire to control the general population's behaviour in their everyday lives?

They all seem keen on net zero to me.
Yes it is a control mechanism, a new religion really.
Forget net zero, actual zero would not make any difference.
I've no idea, but suspect groups just pick a cause (maybe due to alpha personalities on the group taking a lead) and then dedicate themselves to it The political left would do well to drop all the recent nonsense and concentrate prioritising the needs of citizens once more. Then they would be worth considering.
Odd, I swear we've been living under a conservative govt for some years now ...
A high tax, high spend one.
Wasn't 'Net Zero' one of Johnson's pet projects?
Toratoratora why would actual zero make no difference....unless your just saying if we do it and china, russia,India , usa etc don't then our bit makes almost no diffrence
Precisely. The control is in the hands of the big polluters. All others can do is set a good example, but pointless going to extremes and beating the public up. That's just politicians wanting to stroke their own egos, unconcerned about the people they are supposed to serve.
bob 11:45, mankind has control of 4% of the worlds carbon, of that UK has control of 4% so if we stopped emissions entirely it would reduce emissions by 0.16 of one percent. Unless the big emmitters do something, US, China, India etc we are not going to improve the world. Anything we do is utterly futile.
It's complete nonsense that "anything we do is utterly futile". We created this mess. We can clear it up.
Politicans of all sides are pandering to extremists with very little knowledge of the thing they are being extreme about. This has cost us energy efficiency over this generation. Yes tories/tory lite are mainly to blame.
^Pie in the sky.
11:52 if by "we" you mean the world then yes but anything UK does makes no difference.
^That was to ClareTG0ld.
Toratoratora. .that's like saying why should I stop throwing litter on the street as unless 60 million others do it'll make no real difference to uk litter problems
I don't think TTT is saying that, bob.
It's true that a global problem requires a global solution. It's also true that if every country waits for every other country to do something, claiming that they individually can do nothing, then nothing will be done.

It's defeatism to use the excuse that other countries are larger GHG emitters in absolute terms (among other things, GHG per capita is a more meaningful measure).

Finally, the 4% figure is entirely misleading -- which I've pointed out many times before.
bob that analogy is invalid, but I can fix it for you. If everyone in my street throws a ton of rubbish onto the street and I throw one toffee paper, then yes I am adding to it and I really should not throw my toffee paper but if I do or don't matters not.
I'm not saying we shouldn't do everything we reasonably can to ease emissions and pollution generally but we should not bankrupt ourselves by the obsession.
Preaching concerns for 'the environment' makes any politician sound good.

As does referring to 'people' and 'children', but never ever without prefacing one with 'hardworking ...', and the other with 'our ...'.
