Labour win only 1 out of 3 By-elections. Poor result for a party aspiring to win a General election.
By-election gains are nearly always lost at the following general election. Who will replace Rodders after he loses the next election?

I live in Wales which is a shambles with a Labour run devolved government. If that is repeated in the rest of the country if Labour win the next election we will be in a right mess. I do not want to waste my vote by not voting but to try and get some order here in Wales I am going to vote Tory. A lot of people I know are thinking along the same lines as Mark Drakeford aka...

labour had a 7% gain in uxbridge and would have taken it if green voters had switched to labour... the tories went from a 7000 majority to one of less than 500. this does not suggest that the ULEZ extension is the reason labour didn't win it and actually suggests they should be trying to win over greens rather than tories who hate them... once again the progressive vote was fractured and that let the tories in albeit narrowly.

UK polling report said that holding one of the three seats would have been doing well for the tories... in the event they did it by fluke
6% gain sorry
It is worth remembering that these 3 bye elections were totally unnecessary, and caused by 3 MPs deserting their party and constituents.
Mid Bedfordshire should have been fought for too yesterday, but the Honourable Lady rescinded her resignation or something.
I’m afraid that analysis is wide of the mark Untitled.
You might just as well advocate Labour trying to win over supporters of Lawrence Fox, who also polled more than 500 votes. You’ll never completely win over all the voters of a particular party and in any case the Green Party vote was really pitifully small.
Like it or not the ULEZ thing was a factor and I’m not sure that’s much of a comfort for the winner longterm
No, but at least TTT is happy.
laurence fox voters cannot be won to Labour as a core part of their identity (in fact perhaps the entirety of it!!) is being anti-left... labour aren't losing many voters in that direction

greens can be persuaded to vote labour tactically so they are the bigger "threat"
The other thing to say is that ULEZ surely DOES win over Green voters.
If it doesn’t then nothing will
What you’ve done Untitled is looked at ruthe voting figures and made an erroneous conclusion.
Sure if all the Green votes had gone to Labour they’d have won but I’d imagine that the few who voted for the Greens were the hard core.
What if the Tory candidate had pandered to the likes of Fox? He might have had a bigger majority. And so on. That game can be played all day.
The ULEZ issue was big here: the Tories played it to death and at least two other candidates stood on an explicitly anti platform. The result; 20 per cent swing in Selby is much much less in a seat which is much more of a target.
The evidence speaks for itself.

mm, you have a point there
You cannot make predictions on by-election results, as they are often a protest vote. Both the Tories and Labour did not do well and the Lib Dems got the best results.
I'm looking forward to the Dorries by-election which apparently she is timing to cause as much trouble for the government as possible. Sad woman.
“Labour did not do well”

Labour had their second biggest ever by-election win. Moreover in a rural seat.
As I posted before, the last time that happened was during the 1992-7 Parliament …
'ere, 'ang abaht, I thought by-elections and polls were unimportant.

What's all the chunterring about.
Tora Tora Tora donning The Emperors' New Clothes to hid his massive disappointment at the Tory losses. The next leader of the Labour Party, I predict, will be this man,

but only after SKS has served a couple of terms as PM.
Basically,at the next election, i can see the Tories still being in charge down at Westminster, the SNP still being in charge up here at Holyrood.A depressing thought.
why do you predict wes streeting 10 clarionst? not challenging it just curious
No way can i see the Tories winning the next election, the country will turn to something new.

I think Wes Streeting is a popular MP who is able to "connect". He comes from a very humble background and understands people and situations. Just my prediction, but I think he will be the next leader of the Labour Party.
you may well be right! he is certainly ambitious
