Pope Calls For Universal Ban On Surrogate Parenting

//Pope Francis called on Monday for a global ban on parenting via surrogacy, calling the practice "deplorable" and a grave violation of the dignity of the woman and the child.   Francis' remarks are likely to antagonise pro-LGBT+ groups, since surrogacy is often used by gay or lesbian partners who want to have children, and follow his landmark decision to allow priests to bless same-sex couples.//

Still pondering this a bit but at the moment I think I agree with him - although not for the same reasons.  What say you?

Oh. Okay.

i am not much of a fan of napoleon but he knew how to deal with popes.

why do people think that parents who use surrogacy are not "emotionally involved"? the fact that someone gave birth to someone else tragically does not mean that they care about them. lots of parents are abusive or neglectful or uninterested. i agree with andy hughes.

They are not only emotionally envolved but physically involved too either by the use of eggs or sperm

How many children would be happy to know that although they had been conceived using  their mother's eggs but their father was a serial sperm donor.

From the viewpoint of having tried for years to have a child, ( by the time it was clear I couldn't carry to term I was too old to adopt ) had it been possible ( finances made it a non starter) I would have tried anything.   Those who haven't been there  don't understand the enduring sense of loss, that repeats when your friends start be coming grand parents  too.  My sister couldn't have children either so I didn't have the consolation of having neices or nephews.   For some surrogacy is the only hope of parenthood

"How many children would be happy to know that although they had been conceived using  their mother's eggs but their father was a serial sperm donor."

is it really important? the thing you want is for people who are born to be raised in a loving and comfortable home... does it really matter if someone is upset a few years down the line about how they were conceived? they'll get over it.

How many children would be happy to know that although they had been conceived using  their mother's eggs but their father was a serial sperm donor."

better that than your mother going out and grabbing a faceless man for his seed for a 1 night stand.

at least the donors health is checked

^^^Then knowing that you could have dozens of half siblings out in the big wide world?

why is that such a problem?

^^^Doesn't appear to be to you . Chances are that they might meet up in later life, fall in love etc.

women who think it undignified can always refuse (I imagine many do rule out the idea instantly); others should be allowed to disagree. I don't know if anyone's polled the babies.

Untitled, I think it's important that children know who they are.  This really is all about adults who want what they haven't  and frankly I think that's pretty selfish.  Little thought for the children.

Naomi - Do you have children?

what is so awful about being a child of surrogacy? how is such a child prevented from "knowing who they are"?

that's a bit prying andy hughes!!

Andy; surely that's an unfair question. I wouldn't ask N if she was Jewish or lesbian or black or pink or disabled or an immigrant or a man or a toff. None of that is relevant to an intelligent discussion.
