the US has bombed 85 targets in Iraq and Syria linked to Iranian proxies in retaliation after Iranian militias killed 3 US soldiers in Jordan...

President Biden said "if you harm an American we will respond"...

was this the right thing to do or will it only get worse?

Is it going to stop if they don't retaliate?

Question Author

we'll never know, because they have

Question Author

putting everything else aside for a moment it is quite astonishing that these raids were carried out via non-stop flights from the USA!! incredible.

Do you think it was the right thing to do, untitled?

So far they don't seem to be hitting the right targets, because they've not stopped the attacks on shipping in fact its increased. So wait and see the out come of this raid?

So what do you suggest the US do?

Question Author

on balance probably yes naomi... they have shown wisdom and restraint in counter attacking only those groups likely responsible for the jordan attack and i am relieved indeed that they left the iranian vessel in the red sea alone. i am definitely willing to hear the other side tho.

Iraq and Syria have made their obligatory condemnations of the strikes; but they really ought to be thanking the US for dealing with their rebels for them.

It is a measured response, although it won't have cleared away any spy ships. But maybe shipping attacks are seen as a different matter.

Itcan not reasonably be left alone indefinitely, untitled. The UK needs to warn it off and be prepared to act if it doesn't heed the warning.

Question Author

the UK cannot afford a war with iran so i'm not sure that's wise og

so you think the US/UK should just absorb Iran's attacks?

Question Author

i think the counter strikes against proxies are probably correct. i think that directly attacking the iranian navy will get us into yet another horrendous forever-war and absorb resources that should go to ukraine

9.44. Hit the right targets would be helpful.

It is unlikely to start a war. Iran knows what it's doing and can't be keen to take us on. It would probably drag others in against them too.

Question Author

I hope you are right OG but i suspect the iranian regime is not as scared of the west as we like to suppose

“putting everything else aside for a moment it is quite astonishing that these raids were carried out via non-stop flights from the USA!! incredible.”

I don’t know what aircraft were used but it’s highly likely B52s were involved. They have an unrefuelled range of almost 9,000 miles and their range with in-flight refuelling is only limited by crew endurance. Even from the eastern side of the USA, the distance to Syria is about 6,000 miles, so refuelling would be necessary. However, the B52s’ main base is in Barksdale, Louisiana. During Operation Desert Storm a number of raids were made on Baghdad by B52s from that base. This involved round trips of 16,000 miles taking around 34 hours. This somewhat eclipses the raids carried out under operation “Black Buck” during the Falklands War. These involved RAF Vulcans flying from Ascension Island in the Atlantic to Stanley. At the time these were the longest range bomber raids in history but they were a round trip of a mere 8,000 miles or so, taking over 16 hours. The missions required the Vulcans to be refuelled seven times on their way to Stanley and two of the six accompanying Victor tankers had themselves to be refuelled during the mission. Here’s the refuelling plan:

//the B-1 bombers "flew a single nonstop route from the US" and were able to "gas and go" while travelling in the air.//

//I don’t know what aircraft were used//

B1 Bombers. Known as Rockwell B1 Lancers.

A sweep wing aircraft. Incredible bit of kit.
