Will You Be Getting Any Gesture Eggs This Easter?
A Cadbury store has been criticised by a Christian campaign group for advertising chocolate Easter eggs as "gesture" eggs.
//According to the Daily Telegraph, the shop in Springfields Outlet in Spalding, Lincolnshire, was offering a two for £10 deal on the "gesture" eggs.
Cadbury's owners said it had "no involvement" in the promotion. //

Whoever came up with that gem needs to get back to basics.

On the origins of Easter Eggs I presume it's where you get your facts from , mine's a paste from English Heritage. I wouldn't have put them down as liars:
EARLY EASTER EGGS
Throughout history, people across the world have given each other eggs at spring festivals to mark the seasons. Early Christians in Mesopotamia dyed eggs in the period after Easter. The practice was adopted by the Orthodox Churches, and from there it spread into Western Europe. Eggs represent new life and rebirth, and it’s thought that this ancient custom was absorbed into Easter celebrations.
"Untitled and the rest of the EW would drop our traditions in a heart beat and turn us into a non descript homogenous bore fest. "
you're the one moaning about some random shop calling easter eggs something different... i'm not trying to impose my ideas on anyone!! besides the "traditional" selling of chocolate eggs at the start of spring is still being done isn't it? what does it matter if they are called gesture eggs instead?
tory hissy fit over nothing... completely unserious people
yeah it is a bit of a stretch to say chocco eggs have always been part of the Christian tradition but what the hell, it is Good Friday on AB (*) - an egg striked me as an obvious symbol of resurrection, new start etc
The Poles ( that is the people who live in Poland) PAINT boiled eggs, as a communal activity, and then er look at them.
(*) The Editor has assured me that fully 26% of ABers polled believe that the name ( GF) comes from the story of
the ickle baby Jesus waking up one day and saying - oh good it is Friday - and so the name was born
SYMBOLIC GESTURE or an act that has no purpose or effect other than to show support, respect, etc.
no that isnt a symbolic gesture ( possibly an empty gesure) which is an action that has greater meaning to others than the simple action - - sing of the cross etc
so if it WERE a symbolic gesture it would have the greater meaning denial of christianity - specifically the denial of Jesus as the Son of Gosd - and that is possibly what Naomi indicates
( Please note: Jung ( carlgustav that is!) assigns a completely different meaning to symbol)
I only write this as we have a few intellects on this thread
PeterPedant, //so if it WERE a symbolic gesture it would have the greater meaning denial of christianity - specifically the denial of Jesus as the Son of Gosd - and that is possibly what Naomi indicates//
What on earth are you talking about?
Barry, whether or not you've seen it on an altar, it's all symbolic. The fish on Good Friday, the Simnel cake, the Hot Cross buns, the lamb on Easter Sunday, and the Eggs.... all of it is symbolic and it is all part of our culture.
