With all the news making the decent British population disaffeceted with our own country, how about a reminder of what makes Britain Great? I will start............

1) Torvill and Dean winning gold at the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo.

Jonny Wilkinson is English, therefore British.. So are the Welsh, Scots and N.Irish.

But I agree with Dot, England's Rugby World Cup victory.

Oh, and freedom of speech and carpet slippers.

veryhelpfulguy mentioned the BBC, I agree but would expand that to include all British telly.

Spend a few weeks in the US or Australia and you'll be yearning for even the worst British sitcom.

Oh, and Cornish pasties. Proper Cornish pasties.

The NHS. People whinge about it, but they are a minority I think. Had nothing but good service from them.

Being bad at sports we invented. Just good sportsmanship I think!

The greatest list of inventors, writers and explorers a country could muster with a pretty good list of painters and composers as a supplement.

Alot of folk are happy to grow old and not try and turn back the clock. When a man reaches 60 he doesn't rush out to get a fake tan and a toupe, likewise a woman will not choose to go under the knife when she reaches the same age, but opt for a 'blue rinse' instead. Genuine people, Britain has alot of them about and should be proud of that.

What makes Britain great surely has to be that Islamic fundamentalists can dress up as suicide bombers,let their babies wear "I love Al Qaida" bonnets,and encourages the beheading of "Western Infidels",on the streets of OUR capital city,without being arrested or ripped apart by the local population.

Meanwhile you do 35 M.P.H. In a 30 M.P.H. zone,and you get fined 60 quid!

Homie - I agree with you I think we are a fundamentally a very caring nation who would not see anyone stuck.

I referred to that in my post and I dont think we salute the carers who care without any plaudits day in day out - even little people who shouldnt even have to face things like that at their age.

We were the Greater part of Britanny in bye gone days.

This dispels the notion that the word "Great" stemmed from greatness. Far from it!

Wales winning the Grand Slam last year - that makes Britain great.

As for what makes Great Britain? Being further up and slightly to the left of France - hence "Grande Bretagne" or "Upper Brittany" - as in 'Clapton' and 'Upper Clapton'.
