Do you see a link between Manning's humour and this? If not, what do you see the difference being?
When someone uses the terms p*ki and n*gger in their routine, do you see this being exactly on a par with someone being ribbed for being ginger, or old?
Really? Do you think that 'n*gger, p*,ki and ginger' are all on exactly the same level?

I'm sure you already see the flaw in your argument, Rev. But let's not gloss over it.
Racist humour doesn't stay in a comedy club does it? I'm not bothered about the offence caused to the people who pay for a ticket. I'm bothered about the dissemination of racist views, the assertion that it's fun and fair game to laugh at ni**ers and pa*is, and the encouragement to single them out for ridicule.
Comedians like Bernard Manning and Jim Davidson lead directly to that banana-throwing and monkey-chanting. They cause racist bullying at schools (at best) and beered up pa*i-bashing at worst.
You might find your mum being treated slightly differently if everyone at the local comedy club spent their friday nights rolling around at a comedian mocking the way she looked and suggesting that the place would be better if she died.
But it's all done in jest isn't it??

Hear, hear Rev. People only hear what they 'want' to hear.
When watching Bernard, I need to go to the loo, so I quietly got up to walk outside. As I did so, Bernard immediately picked me out for ridicule. I was wearing a smart navy suit with a short skirt & he shouted "Blimey luv, I can see your f*****g brillo pad"!
I scurried off as everyone fell about laughing, including my husband, our friends & me.
He was hilarious!

No - I didn't say throwing bananas AT players...they were never missiles aimed to hit people...they were an expression of what some supporters thought of black players...that they were monkeys.
And Manning did exactly the same. His jokes weren't about racial quirks. They were all about how he hated blacks and Asians.
He said as much on Mrs Merton.
He said that no black man could ever be British even if he were born here ("Just because a dog is born in a stable, doesn't make it a horse").
Are you absolutely sure you can't see what this man was?
Tell you what - if anything (God forbid) were to happen to someone like Victoria Wood, I absolutely GUARANTEE that the majority of the nation would be upset.
Manning? Well, there are a few who will mourn his passing, but I absolutely guarantee that the vast majority will either a) not give a toss or b) smile inwardly.
He was despised. I think there is a very small and fast disappearing minority of people who yearn for the days when you could get away with overt racism/sexism/gay-hating on telly.
They didn't notice alternative comedy sweeping that away in the 80s.
Thank God eh?

Think I'm off to stick pins in my eyes lol.
Totally agree with you Smudge and it all comes down to taste.
He didn't do anything illegal, mades loads of people laugh and made a shedload of cash doing so.
Thing is who do you rate as being worse him for making people laugh or people on here saying they wished him dead and that he burns in hell.
I know who I would rather have a pint with.

I got to see Bernard at the Isle Of Man one year during the TT Races, and believe me this man was very ,very funny,
a great comedian with the best timing in the business, when people like Sir Alex Ferguson make a comment on his passing it goes to show how popular Bernard was. R.I.P BIG MAN you where a comedy legend.
