There are some people who's passing is good news.

Hitler, Osama Bin Laden..etc.

Now Manning wasn't anywhere near as evil as those two, but believe me - growing up as a black kid the 70s, if people like him never existed, life would've been considerably better.

What do you think is the appropriate response to his death from the black community.

Do you really, and absolutely think we should burst into tears.

Would you say he made things easier for us?

I'm astonished that you think we would love the man.

I tell you what - off the top of my head, the comics who's passing would upset a lot of people I know are:

Dawn French
Victoria Wood
Peter Kay
Ricky Gervais
Eric Sykes
Julia Hilla
Julie Walters
Barry Cryer (genius)
Dave Allen (ditto)
Stanley Baxter (70s comedy God)

None of these people needed to (or still do) base their acts on hackneyed old racial stereotypes, and all are loved much more than Bernard Manning.

I celebrate his passing...and if we lost any of the above, I could genuinely see myself shedding a tear.
Surprised sp1814 you didn't shed a tear a year or two ago when Dave Allen passed away.

sp1814, why would life have been considerably better with out Bernard Manning?,was he a threat to you?... the police were and still are bigger racists than he ever was, you`re entitled to your opinions but jeez....what a drama queen you are

sp1814, are you telling me that Bernard Manning was responsible for all the racial problems in the 70s, are you real, where did i say that you all loved the man, i said that there were loads of coloured people in his club, which is true ,i should know, i was there often enought. to compare him to Hitler, Bin Larden, etc, shows that you are a very immature person, and someone who plays the race card at every opportunity, you have your opinion and i have mine, i am glad you are not a friend of mine. could i just add that all his giggs were sell outs, so lots of people must have liked him,
infundibulum, i have never read such a load of rubish in my life.
-- answer removed --
The rubbish you posted, I think
Never heard of him.
But I don't live in the UK.
So that's how important his death is in the scheme of things.

Put it this way...whenever we`ve discussed Bernard Manning at work, none of the black guys find him offensive, they do not see him as a threat, they see him as what he is..a comedian..telling jokes, they do however find it amusing how middle class white folk find him offensive yet in reality, the average middle class white folk wouldn`t want a black man living next door to them...their words not mine
He wasn't racist, he just told racist jokes as part of his tv act. Well that is an act of racism, not possibly the most aggressive, ie he didn't throw bricks or stones at black people but used a clever and insidious weapon, humor.
At present on AB and elsewhere there is much upset about paedophiles, if I were to start making jokes about sexually abusing children could I say - well its not that I approve of such behaviour but I am getting a laugh aren't I!
He was sexist but I am sure there are some deluded women who would say he didn't mean his jokes in fact he loved them. Doesn't stop him being sexist just because sometimes the butt of his joke(sic) didn't understand.
I am glad he has gone, didn't wish him to die but everyone has to go and the likes of him sooner rather than later.
The thing that has always made me wryly smile about AB is the liberal sympathetic whining we have from some members who feel pretty much every low life should be treated with empathy, we mustn't abuse their yuman rights, we must try to understand why they've committed such heinous crimes, and when we've found out we must treat the cause 'holisitcally'.............yet when somebody they don't like dies, somebody who, as far as I am aware has never been arrested for racism, homophobia or any other ism or obia that just happens to be the most fashionable this week, we get people saying (paraphrasing) 'great, the ******* dead, good riddance to the ******* I hope he rots in hell'

Its amazing how these pious holier than thou hand wringers all of a sudden become invective spitting braying celebrants of a death.

Suggest that a burglar should have his hands cut off or a rapist his nuts cuts off and these same people lose their bloody minds in defending them.

Oh, and Dawn French a comedian - purlease. I've had more fun having my ears syringed.

By the way - personally I've never found Manning funny, but that may just be because I prefer observation based comedy as opposed to joke telling.
Marvelman

Play the race card???

Sweet Holy Mary - you don't even see the irony do you.

Right...just because there were a few black and Asian people in The Embassy Club when you went does not mean that they are representative of all blacks and Asians in this country. Just like any other social/racial group we are individuals....and I absolutely guarantee to you that many, many people from my age group, who were teenagers in the 70s despised his humour. He was part of the reason why alternative comedy flourished in the 80s.

Now - the race card...how on EARTH can I discuss Bernard Manning without referencing my race?

C'mon - can't you see that BM is absolutely known for telling racist jokes (such as the one I referred to in an earlier post).

Now - are you seriously telling me the majority of the black community will mourn his passing?

Really?

Oh, and I TOTALLY didn't know that Dave Allen had died. I used to LOVE his shows in the 70s. He used to make me cry laughing. Same with Morecombe and Wise and Stanley Baxter.

Most people I know used to look forward to their Christmas shows...Bernard Manning however was just filth.

And you need to re-read what I said about Hitler and Osama Bin Laden. I'm comparing him to them only because they are perceived as evil people who's passing is not a cause of mass mourning. You can justify feeling happy at the death of an evil man when they have brought misery to people.

Bernand Manning brought misery to people.
If a joke is funny then it's funny. He must have been giving people what they wanted i.e. packing his club out for god knows how many years, other venues, selling DVDs. if he was such a bad man wouldn't he have been standing on his own in a big empty room??

Think some people should get off their high horses, sticks and stones and all that.
And of course I suppose that all the self righteous have never laughed at an Irish/Scots/Jewish/Fat joke have they?

I'm from the Black Country and constantly get stick for sounding like Frank Skinner, being thick etc but it's funny the same as Scousers in shell suits, Mancs being mad for it, Cockneys being wide boys etc etc you have to be able to laugh at yourself.
i dont think for a minute bernard manning was in the slightest bit interested in what anyone thought of him, obviously plenty of people did enjoy his acts otherwise he wouldnt have got to where he was with all the trappings of money!
Did Manning ever tell jokes about fat white working class Northerns?

Nah.

Here's a joke then...what do you call it when a fat racist dies?

A damn good start.

(That was edited from a joke I heard him say on telly years ago, but instead of a 'fat racist' he said 'a bus full of n*****s).

I genuinely hope he burns in hell.

Off to buy some bunting now.
pathetic
well said revfunk, i also am from near you and know what you mean
