Britishness.
71 Answers
In response to the posts below I'd like to know what Britishness is?
Years ago the phrase "be British" meant being steadfast and stoical, years ago the British were renowned for their good manners, stiff upper lip and sense of fair play,do you feel that is still true?
So if you were an immigrant what do you think you would do to be British?
Please don't go on about what they should'nt do, what are the norms that an immigrant should aspire to?

A country united, lovely against and for what?
The monarchy?
Republicanism?
We've always been a multi national nation, if it was'nt for Indian troops we'd have lost Burma in WW2, if it was'nt for Indian troops we would'nt have had South Africa in WW1 or WW2 in fact if it was'nt for Indian troops we would'nt have been able to prosecute the 2nd Anglo Sudanese war or posses Egypt and the oil it provided.
Don't forget the U.S n1ggers who pitched in WW1 and WW2 and also the Chinese who were on our side in 1914-18.
But again I ask what is Britishness?
Elvis you've at least made an effort, but you're still telling me largely what it is'nt.
I'm off to bed.

'Britishness' - like all national concepts - is inherently indefinable. It's reliant on generalisations like the 'stiff upper lip' ones you've described in the title post, which have only ever been true to an extent.
It's also defined in different grounds. Ask someone on the right what 'Britishness' is or was and they might talk about national pride or how great the country was/is. Ask someone on the left and they might cite the UK's record on civil liberties and social legislation.
Less politically, others might also cite national symbols (the monarchy, historic figures etc). All of these seem rather superficial, though.
On the other hand, I think most people would agree there's a British 'culture' - or perhaps more likely that there are English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh cultures - and that these are also pretty difficult to define yet we do tend to agree they do exist. If this is the case, then you might say 'Britishness' is similar.

Thanks Krom the first attempt at a proper answer, there is an irony though the very British who talk about rights and liberties would seek to deny some those rights for their safety.
It's a slippery slope, I cannot think of an event in my life were I've nearly come to blows with a theist, but many with atheists (and I don't mean over religion) but to ban atheism to try and prevent casual violence would be a joke.
