OK not usual Geezer territory this but what can be done about this whaling for "reasearch" the Japs do? How many dead whales do you need for "research" what a load of Bull! I'm not normally a supporter of your beardy weirdy Greenpeace types but hey on this subject they get Geezer backing, leave the kin things alone!

Whales are beautiful creatures and the scientific excuse is just ridiculous. Its not just Japan, Norway and Iceland support the hunting of whales. Shame on them.

I don't think we have much room to dictate really.
We still hunt down foxes with packs of hounds so they can tear it to pieces and then call it sport.
And before the "foxes are pests" brigade chime in consider this, What possible excuse can you give that supports what the hunt does.
And yes I have seen what a fox can do to a chicken house but thats just a survival instinct. What reason do so called civilised human beings have for behaving in the same way?
The Japenese don't have a good reason for hunting whales but then we are no better.

Of course they could just as easily turn round to us and say "what are you doing in Iraq".

How many humans have been killed in Iraq since we (and others) went there.

(I know Saddam was killing people but more have probably died in Iraq since we went there than when Saddam was in charge).

Not condoning what the japaneese do, just pointing we have our own faults as well.

The scientific research they're carrying out is vital. I mean which of us at some point hasn't wondered whether the Minke or the Humpback tastes better with wasabe sauce. I know I have.

I'd say that the Japanese since the end of WWII have done more than any other country to be flexible and that the younger generations are finding it easier to communicate on a reasonable basis with western cultures. It always takes many years for such far-reaching cultural differences to be addressed, but this is happening and will eventually become reconciled with world-wide opinion.
The majority of Japanese people don't support whale researching in Japan so to blame the general population is akin to blaming each and every one of us for governmental failings.
