G20 - Another protester assaulted by Police
A police sergeant seen in video footage hitting a woman during the G20 protest in London has been suspended, Scotland Yard has said.
He is shown hitting the woman in the face with his hand and her leg with his baton after allegedly being sworn at.
The sergeant works for the Territorial Support Group.
"The officer has been identified and suspended pending further investigation. The officer works as a sergeant in the territorial support group," he added.
Earlier, police said the actions of the officer featured in the footage raised "immediate concerns".
David Howarth, the Liberal Democrat's justice spokesman, has called for a "full-scale inquiry".
"The fact that this video shows another example of an officer with his number obscured assaulting a member of the public indicates that there is a systematic problem here, not just a series of individual acts of misconduct," he said.
It is easy to see how a large crowd would be angered by seeing the police attack people. Surely it is only luck that this did not provoke a full scale riot.
Are acts of violence by the Police now permissible against people exercising their right to protest?

I'd be interested to know how many people "knocking" the Police have ever been in their place?
How are the Police expected to deal with people "in their face", i.e. NOT protesting peacefully?
How comfortable are YOU if someone gets close enough to invade your "personal space"?
No amount of training can change the fact that Police Officers are no different to any other human being, except that when it comes to matters like this, any idiot can put some self-righteous, holier-than-thou post on here lambasting the Police who have no right of reply!

paraffin:
Self-righteous, holier-than-thou post ahead warning
Both incidents are common assault and are against the law. We should expect the Police to uphold the law not break it themselves. These are not ordinary police, they are the Territorial Support Group, who are supposed to be specially trained in dealing with incidents such as these. The fact that they are thumping people means they are not doing their job properly.
if you or I attacked someone who was slow to get out of our way, or who gave us some verbal, we would face a criminal prosecution for assault.

If you ask me having just one instace of this shows that the Police actually do a great job. I'm no fan of Plod but when it comes to doing this sort of job they are right up their unlike the pinko liberals on here who seem to think the old bill should be negotiating with the great unwashed.
The protesting scum(not the peacfull lawfull ones) should get whatever comes their way, they are quick enough to chuck things and hurl abuse in a coppers face but once small incident and what happens oh yes their bloody ooman rights.
Tazering is too good R1. Get these scum of the dole and save me some tax,.
I was here through those protests - in the City, being initmidated by scum who are happy to take money of the very people they initimidate. If you are caught on such a demo your dole should be stopped - immediately.

R1 I have to take isue with you on this one.
Verbal abuse of the police doing their jobs is unacceptable, but so is common assault - twice, once with a weapon, which is what the officer's reaction ammounts to.
"So the plod on the ground has to just tolerate being abused and spat at ..." Er, yes they do.
It's wrong of course, but the officer's reaction - as a sergeant and therefore an exmaple to his ranks - was deplorable and cannot be allowed to go unpunished.
I don't think you will ever get a majority on here to agree that bad behaviour justifies violent response from the police - it's simply not going to fly.

So he goes and tries to arrest her, right oh she won't go copper probably gets mugged by her mates, this way the problem was sorted on site, end of story. No need to take all that trouble and expense. I think the copper did us all a service. I suppose you are one of theose lefties like old Barmy Bernie who would revel in the police getting a "good hiding", PC Blakelock probably tried your approach.
If the crowd is legally protesting then great, otherwise the old bill have no choice but to be firm, if you ask me she got off lightly, cuff round the ear used to be standard practice.
