what a shocking and disgusting sight!
We knew we were in for cuts by this Government but to see students lighting fires outside Tory HQ and smashing the windows of Millbank Towers in London is, quite frankly, sickening, it's like looking at mob rule, what they expect to achieve by their thug-like actions, I don't know!

In answer to your question and I can only speak from my experience and in the 50´s, if your examination results were not good enough to get you a place in University, you either stayed at school another year or you went to a Poly or night school.
I presume that you are about to tell me that this is now not the case.

Polytechnics educated a number of people like that at HND level but they also did higher level qualifications often in specific areas
Where I went was one of the few places where you could study in an American sort of format so I could do a degree that "majored" in Phiysics and "minored" in Astronomy.
It was also a centre of excellence in aeronautical engineering which is not something covered by many other places.
The basic difference was that Universites tended to validate their own degrees whereas Polytechnics were validated by the Council for National Academic Awards.
That way you could be certain that a degree from one such institution was comparable to another
Or you could if you knew the first damn thing about what you were talking about instead of arrogantly mouthing off all the time
