Although technically wrong, don't others agree that this young man will take more notice of his Dad's actions than anything the police and the authorities would be prepared to punish him with?

Now, since physical chastisement has been outlawed......do we feel safer in our streets at night (and I don´t mean in rural Norfolk)
I am sure that there are statistics that show varying levels of crime among teenagers and young adults compared to say 1970, but I ask again:
"Has this reduced the rate of physical violence and if so is it due to outlawing of physical violence in chastising children?"
The answer I fear, to both questions is ...NO

The outlawing of physical violence will not have made a scrap of difference to those who use physical violence to punish their kids Sqad. Who is going to even know that the kids are being punished physically in their own homes.
Therefore the statistics are unlikely to reflect the law.
In general it is is the kids of people that are punished with physical violence (I don't mean a slap on the wrist or back of leg) are those that will be violent and cause problems. It is learned behaviour. Kids initially learn from their parents and that learning in the early years is what is the most crucial to our behaviour and attitudes.
Well, that is my opinion anyway!

Zeuhl, if a boss of mine had assaulted me or one of my family in the workplace he would be very sorry indeed. We are talking of parential control of children. Smacking has been outlawed, but teaching a child right from wrong from an early age is vital, not by smacking a very young child. No-one can be sure that he/she doesn't end up in a young offenders institution, but if you cannot make the lesson stick then you should chastise them.
