Yes i thought that aswell! Its a generation thing i guess. Older generations dont have a problem with it but it has gained some unfortunate associations over the years (the USA, South Africa etc).
I dont like it but i'm not 'of colour' so i cant really complain.
I dont think its particularly offensive - just a bit out dated.
I'd agree - it is outdated, but it does have a hint of 'white superiority' about it. I think 'black' is more acceptable, or 'of colour' if you want to be really right-on about it.
Coloured, Black, does it really matter, they call white people Honky, Whitey and other things. Political Correctness is a load of cr*p as far as I'm concerned, it didn't exist before 1997! And heres a thing, did you know the popular phrase 'Booyakasha' means in African "Death To Whites!"? Racist my a**e! When it suits people, they can be as racist as the next person!
There's an interesting article here:

http://www.kcl.ac.uk/depsta/law/research/rec/antirac.htm l

that explains the thinking behind some of the terms currently used to denote the various ethnicities.

Doubtless there'll be someone along in a second to call this political correctness gone mad...
All I can say to the article in the link is, Britain is SO fu*ked!!!!!!!!! Gimmie the money, I'm gone!!!
My mistake. Someone did it whilst I was typing my answer...

"Booyackasha" does not mean 'Death to whites". It's an onomatopaeic term meant to resemble the sound of a discharging shotgun.

madein1978 - where exactly did you hear that Booyakasha meant "Death To Whites"? Incidentally, African is not a language.

As I understand it Booyaka has West Indies origins & is just an exclamation to simulate gunshots fired in celebration. Isn't Booyakasha is a catchphrase made up by Ali G..?

oosp! cross posted

Just read it!!

' ******** Baffles Brains'

I always thought "coloured" meant mixed-race, as opposed to black which meant, er, brown. Oh well.

Definition 9, [edited by AB] OK its not Oxford concise, proves I didn't make it up though!

And people are racist when it suits them, how about the english calling scots 'jocks' or the Irish 'micks'. You might dismiss it as legpulling but this is racism whether you like it or not! Now how about I raise up hell about that??

There is quite a long and interesting thread about this very topic here:
http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/News/Question157070.html
The document to which Waldo provided a link was produced by the Black Women's Sub-Committee. I wonder what was produced by the White Men's Sub-Committee.
Ok then Afrikaans, if you want all proper about it!
Why are you telling people to shut up for correcting an error, based on a source even you conceed is unreliable (and doesn't even mention Afrikaans), madein1978?

And what is your point about black people being capable of racism? Whoever said they couldn't, and regardless, how does that therefore make it okay?

Chill out; stop banging your knees on the underside of the table.
What the [edited by AB] are you supposed to call a coloured person??? "A genetic mix of the white and black races"?? Can't say that..its got the word "black" in it. [edited by AB]
I'm not racist - I've got a colour TV.
Me too. Did you you watch "Have I got news for you" last night??
bill barlow is white not a colour too? Why do you feel the need to use profanities?
