many thx spangle111

Hi albatross521, From memory, mutton birding was/is an activity carried out in the far south of New Zealand, around the Stewart Island/Invercargill area. The mutton bird (I think) is a very fatty sea bird that requires many 'boilings' to remove excess fat before trying to roast them. To my knowledge there are no printed recipes but locals, when asked, will usually reply "you've got to boil the b******s".

Mutton birding is a seasonal outing, sort of group activity. I did try them once, they are truly revolting and would be better left to their own devices in the southern ocean. In this day and age of frozen chicken thighs the hunting of the mutton bird is unnecessary.

Hi Waimarie. You said it. I did get this line from Newzealand Herald. A family going muttonbirding down south ended up in the rough sea, 3 resued, 3 died.

Thx for more light shed on this topic.
