An old saying

Not sure on the spelling, but it sounds like floriet dubris anavelt wild, and means something like 'goodbye dover, until we meet again'. What does it actrually mean and how is it spelt?

Probably 'floreat Dubris' - but I don't know the rest.

Floreat dubris - may mean 'Let Dover flourish'. (?) Not at all sure about the "anavelt wild" part.

Where's it from, T? Coat of arms? The town crest?

Wish I knew where it was from. Sadly his Grandad my b/fs grandad has recently died and it's something he always used to say. His family want to use it on the service songsheet and on his headstone....

I think I have the "Floreat Dubris" part right, T. It sounds very much like it could be an old school motto. But no idea about the second part. Sorry.

Floreat Dubris = "Let Dover flourish", or "May Dover flourish".
