Does anyone know what is meant by the phrase 'no sh*t sherlock'..ive heard it many of times & always wondered what it means!

hey, people say it when someone says something really stupid. it implies the person is not very bright as sherlock was ' very clever' as a detective so it is a sarcastic comment to the person who said somethin silly. sorry im terrible at explainin things! hope it helps anywho!

Not quite. It is said when someone says something that's obvious. Self-evident. A truism.

Sherlock (Holmes) would use his powers of deduction to dig well below the surface to come to his conclusions.

Obviously the statement is a sarcastic reference to the fact that the person making the self-evident statement has not had to put in quite so much effort or intellect.


i'd agree with rja - like saying oranges are orange as though this is a revelation - its obvious and takes no brain power to know this

the 'no sh*t' bit, is like mock shock, "you don't say! "

it is indeed sarcastic
