I'm told the expression waning powers is used to describe the time when a musician (possibly in an orchestra) is no longer at their peak - is this so and what is its origin?

Waning means diminishing, commonly used to describe the moon as it moves from full to new. But the word can certainly be applied to anything/anyone that is in the process of losing strength, power, fame, etc.
