Making good progress with this. Just got the 10 lines to draw. Lots of thematic material (and lots of fun)

i must say i hadn't considered that possibility clamzy, but as the brb has been so specific i think i will stick. it's an interesting possibility though.
Still struggling with this one. I still cannot work out 30d. I've got the travellers, the appointee, one mode of transport and possibly 6 of the lines linking 12 cells.
Just started this yesterday. Solved a good number of the clues and have various letters in the perimeter, with thoughts as to what some of the perimeter words might be. No real idea yet as to what it is all about. To those who are sometimes concerned that too much is given away on this site, we can happily say that posts to date give us no assistance at all.
Late starting, as usual, having just returned from my annual trip to Eichstätt and surrounds. What a spell-binding puzzle, brimful of thematic material. I was initially bedevilled by the jumbling, particularly in the SE corner, and then by the problem of finding the items of apparel, but having completed it I am totally bewitched. I just wonder if The Tall'n missed a small trick by not making the grid hexagonal?

The best puzzles, I feel, not only provide excellent entertainment, which this did, but transcend the essential triviality of the pursuit by sending you off to other sources. In this case, de Quincy ("Suspiria de Profundis") and Durer, among others, have something extra to offer.
looks like like lord baden powell added a few extras too.
....that's not an example of the liverpudlian 'double like' like.
Quite a challenge, that one. Only got the periphery pretty late on and spent a long time looking for the ten lines even though I spotted what turned out to be two of them quite quickly. Should I be worried that two of the items worn seem slightly tighter than the other two?!
i counted - 1 large 2 medium and 1 small
.......unless you mean closer?
Have now got the other mode of transport which I initially thought was one of the travellers! I think I have got the third of the four items, descriptively, but my inability to get 30d is affecting my ability to get the small one, though I have an idea that I am going to try out. Do the 22 cells all link up? If my idea is right the small one would not!
yes bellabee, I was referring to closeness of fit, but I'm with you on the sizes!
i think that is ok then JackDeCrow / 30d - on the outside [for hilarious performances] think pantomime scotsman's interjection. the middle part of the clue following the first letter of this.i think your idea is right teuchter2
Returned from trip to Amalfi Coast this afternoon, but fortunately managed to pick up the Times in Positano. With no access to BRB etc managed to get around 2/3 of the grid completed, including top and left sections of the perimeter. However identifying key words in the remainder of the perimeter which announced the theme, had to await my return. All in all a very enjoyable puzzle.
Nice puzzle - just the right level of challenges throughout. Thank you, Tall'n. Glad to see others struggling with the same bits I struggled with (30d & 34d). At first I thought that the little one could be travelling North, and then realised that without this direction they could easily hang-glide in even if they missed the other modes of transport..... didn't think of EasyJet!
If it had been Ryanair it may have appeared in next week's grid !
Yes, I finally got there without any help from this thread. I thought it was an excellent puzzle. It's good to be able to talk about it without much being given away. Sometimes just the fact of expressing your thoughts enables you to take the further step. I used to find that when I could discuss my thoughts about various clues with someone, even though he was hopeless at crosswords! Now I am on my own that option isn't open.
i find that simply asking for a hint usually does the trick!
i consulted with my daughter about various possible themes before i had filled the perimeter. on informing her of the answer after completion, her response was "er...right"
After a long struggle I finally got the perimeter, the travellers and the ten straight lines, but I'm still struggling with the appointee. Is the said appointee in Bradford under the obvious heading?
I get that response from my wife all the time concerning a whole range of issues - customarily extended to "er...right, 'im...wrong"
