Thanks, Bellabee and Clamzy for the hints. The penny has not dropped yet but I will continue to stare at the grid! I think I may be barking up the wrong tree as none of your hints seem to make any sense with the words I already have, although they do seem to correspond with what I would expect those travellers to be wearing!

SallyR - You are correct in assuming that there's not much those four could be wearing which can be drawn with straight lines and I'm sure you have the correct apparel.

Got there with a little help:- thanks, Clamzy. Bellabee - my problem was that I had convinced myself that my most westerly traveller was wearing something else which was trailing below their left ankle - I wonder if that was a deliberate red herring? What an amazing puzzle! As a newbie to the Listener I am well and truly hooked adn thanks to all on here for the encouragement

Bellabee - I can see a squashed item of relevant apparel as suggested by SallyR at the left ankle, though to avoid confusion for anyone not yet completed, this does not of course from part of the final lines.

I won't speak for Drb but I thought he was referring to a word appearing twice in the grid.

thanks clamzy - got it, left/right is always a problem unless prefaced with 'screen' i find. i thought drb was referring to the little one looping the loop in the easyjet.

Clamzy - with direction of transport in line with entry, the short word I was looking would be left ankle (though right would be equally valid).However to be facing away would need to be travelling side-saddle ?

Quick scan on the web - the definitive TV show (64-72) definitely suggests that side-saddle is de rigeur. However other sites suggest controversy on the correct way to be facing, if you are a true believer.

On holiday this week - how I look forward to when in a few more years I will be able to spend more of my time on this sort of serious research !

It is significant that the TV evidence ends in 1972. Since then the increasing wearing of leggings and trousers by ladies has rendered side-saddle somewhat obsolete (Egad - suddenly got Russ Conway in my aural memory). Anyway, I thought nudity was preferred on such occasions.

Finished. Excellent construction. Found an erroneous letter in the four word apparel so had to retrace steps, a bit like retracing an error in Sudoku, but got there. Should have paid more attention to that little word "today" in the rubric.
