I would think that Mikesnow asked for an animal, and a rook is a bird, and a rat is a rodent? I like the answer Stag.

The letters are in a grid, up,down and accross. I try all directions that is how I know an answer wont fit in.

Stag seems a good answer- I wasn't aware it was a synonym for betray. I'm not convinced, though, that rats (and rooks) are not animals
