It took me ages but I got there eventually. LIK's advice is good - start with the 3 letter words first because there is only one way they can fit with the crossers
I also listed my solutions on a sheet of paper according to the number of letters so that it was easier to see which letters might fit where
I don't usually do these - but I did the previous one in the guardian and quite enjoyed it so decided to give it another go
Imp is not one of them but part of a thematic pair
The other 3 letter solution is also thematic - beginning with u. The middle letter of this is the first letter of a 10 letter solution
I would suggest waiting until you have most of them solved before trying to complete the grid because it will then be reasonably clear how the solutions fit in
