REPOST (Same meaning as riposte) = S(t)op uprising in RET(urn) goes in a column above the bolt, giving two new words meaning rest and stand. The T of Stop going in the middle row as per preamble.
SHAM is correct. Shaman giving up AN (A gai N) again when exhausted.
Put into groups = placed in ability groups as in school, including T for temperature and the whole thing means "restored after dropping" (Printer's term)
I think I can parse all of the answers, but the middle row and poem are escaping me, although the last 8 letters of the middle row could very easily accommodate a poet.
Thanks saladdoger.
I think I got lost because my answer to Strain leash was stripe which I put in the second column.
It seems the correct answer is String and goes under Among.
Mong means a crowd and a mongrel.
Among means here and there.
