Tootling along quite well, but I need some help with: 5 down: What twitchers have caught is set free (4) TI?S 35 down: Jack passed up cake, lifting recipe (3) P?R
I have one of the clues (and answer!) to the clues containing superfluous five-letter string, but don't know what the second one is (typical of me)
Any help gratefully received!

Luckily it's only Monday - I try to do these crosswords by Thursday!!

Ripper, I treated the title as three separate clues - that gave me three words that I then spotted....

The 3 words lead to what could be 2 (3 originally, but one is a compound)starting the behold bit. Then I saw the rest...

One last (hopefully) question - what does "change it's letters in a number of steps" ? what I have got, with no changing, looks perfect to me. The first 3 words are the title, but become the item when 'spaced' differently. So why do I have to change letters?

OK I'm still stuck, I have a 'sausage shaped' item, one side (left) is static, the other side moves, if you see what I mean! I've tried rotating it till 'I'm blue in the face' but only get non-words if I do.

There are three answers that can't be changed Ripper - that means the same 3 letters will be spaced the same when you move the equipment (you have the right approach).

...actually, there are four - 8ac/9dn (giving the same letter) 28ac + 30ac. So you have a rotated position where A A + S are in the same places each time.
