third time lucky, in the left hand column there is IW written over the word DERAS and in the right hand column there is IW written over ER with a squiggly e in between the IW and ER the e resembles the lower case symbol for epsilon.
apologies for that, the dingbat is hard enough

Hops, all I was trying to do was give a clue rather than the answer as there is some time to go before it closes. Think of where IW is..

Florence (Nightingale) ??
What Ellie said...almost. Now look at the clue... I think (hope?) they're associated with Christmas.
Florence Nightingale?
^^ :)
oh got it at last tasty too x
Florentines!
Jo, you are brilliant! Thanks for putting us out of our misery. Well done you!
xxxx
Is the answer Florentines? (Florent in ES)
Question Author
thanks, scorpiojo, it all stemmed from you.
that leaves the oriental one, would you say that my answer[s] are right or wrong under eastern stars would be correct if there is anything christmassy about it
]
You're welcome, hops (I don't mind scorps :))... I prefer Tilly's first answer, but take your point about the constellation. I'll ponder (I honestly don't know, not teasing lol.)
..sorry, mally's first answer.
Question Author
you mean mally's star of the east, but if that is right and mally usually is as well why would the dingbat not show orion written over oriental instead of vice versa, leave it with you
Oriental as you say, is From the East

Orion is a constellation which contains three stars known as The Three Kings.

Suggest We three kings of orient are'''
Morning, Dave. This is what hops said earlier...

ORIENTAL written over ORION

i have two answers, firstly, STAR OF THE EAST and secondly, WE THREE KINGS OF ORIENT ARE
i am not happy with either because the quizmaster again as repeatedly said you must answer the dingbat in the order in which it comes, ie. ORIENTAL comes first and not ORION, also orion is a constellaton and not itself a star so that would suggest that east or eastern or of the east comes first. a perfect answer would have been UNDER EASTERN STARS but alas although this is a book it is nothing to do with christmas as far as i can see, so as my old grandpappy used to say i'm flummoxed
Yes, thanks Jo. Looks as it may be as flummoxing as Eye Wunder, which I had never heard of. Strange answering a clue then having to check what it means or relates to.
Was also looking for a Hunter connection - Orion. Am beginning to think it has less to do with stars.
I like your three kings, though.
From the east there came three kings, or
From the east the three kings came.
Question Author
hello, dave, yes that is where i got three kings from as well, but looking closer they are in orions belt, and also the word 'we' is difficult to get out of this dingbat now this may seem pedantic but i think the quizmaster would have put orions belt in the clue, you will see from the answers given on the other dingbats that when someone is clever enough to solve them, they fit in nicely
i had to smile about your comment on strange answering a clue and then having to look the answer up , that is me too. i thought i was adept at solving dingbats, god knows i have been attempting them long enough and then you come on this site and realize you are not as clever as you thought
