Truffle bought for �63,000

A British resident has purchased a unique investment this week, a 1.2kg rare white truffle for �63,000.

Bidding at a charity auction via satellite from Hong Kong, the British woman beat competition from London and the Grinzane Cavour castle near Turin to take home the fungus.

The truffle, that was around "the size of a handbag" is only found in Piedmont, Italy, for two months of the year. This particular specimen was sniffed out by hounds under an oak tree.

The purchase knocked down the previous record holder for a truffle of �28,000 held by a consortium involving Gwyneth Paltrow purchased at last year's auction.

Overall, the seventh Alba Truffle Auction helped to raise over �150,000 for children's charities.
