Saturdays won't be the same without his challenging GK crossword and the links to Monday's Herculis, which has developed into it's own challenge on answerbank. I know that we all had occasional grumbles about his alt sp etc. but none of us are perfect. I hope that the Telegraph continue to run both crosswords in a similar fashion in his memory.
My prayers go to his family at this sad time.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that Michael Mepham had died on Thursday, and at 62, which is no age at all. He will be so missed, idiosyncracies and occasional blunders and all ( added spice to the challenge!) He's been like an old, familiar friend, regularly meeting on Saturdays. I feel quite devastated as must many other DT Xword fanatics. I only hope these heartwarming tributes will be of some small comfort to his bereaved family. Thankyou, Michael, for the many hours of pleasure and education you provided us.
I have just picked up on this dreadfully sad news as I am seldom on line except at weekends. What a loss. He was such a kind correspondent too...we used to josh each other and it was always with wry humour. May I join you all, albeit belatedly, in sending heartfelt condolences to his wife and family ...and colleagues. MM made us all THINK ..... a good idea in this day and age of spoon-fed
entertainment. As one of you has already said ...but it bears repetition..."he will be a hard act to follow".

I have been away at Christmas festivities and haven't been able to get on here. But I would like to add my own condolences to Mike Mepham's family - I only contacted him a couple of times via e-mail, but always received a kind response. I obviously never knew him, but just knew that he was 'always there'. He will be sadly missed, by us all. My knowledge has grown, thanks to him. Muriel.
I too have only just read this thread of tributes to a fine man. It was a great shock to read of his passing, and to realsie that he was younger than me! I too wish his family every condolence and thank him for such enjoyment over the years.
Paul McCarthy donated the Paul Danher Trophy in honour of a former compiler who passed on some years ago. Maybe we members of AB could donate a similar tribute for an annual contest, say, for Sudoku?
