MM Links August 2009 [Week 4]

Good morning all and welcome to my fourth week as Pope Adrian the Abundant. It would seem that the entreaties of those that have been on their knees praying for miracles have been answered.
A couple of Sundays ago, my wife and I drove round the 'Road to Hell': so-named by Chris Rea in song referring to that large car park euphemistically known as the M25. We were on our way to Windsor to visit the Savill Garden, which is a 35-acre section of the Great Park containing an extraordinary range of flowers and trees from around the world. Windsor is a lovely town to wander around, if it wasn't for the tourists! It is pleasant to walk down to the River Thames and across the bridge into Eton. We also occasionally go to the Theatre Royal in Windsor, where they often stage new productions before transferring to London's West End or go off on tour around the country (usually with casts containing well known names). Another delightful attraction is to take a boat up the river and arrive at the Royal Windsor Racecourse in style.

The domestic football season is well underway and now with the Premiership also kicking off last weekend, its all systems Go. Wednesday week was the Glorious Twelfth; marking the start of the grouse-shooting season, although a plague of heather beetles has stripped bare tens of thousands of acres of moorland; which may cause the cancellation of some shoots.
I always used to look on the beginning of the football season as the final act to bring the curtain down on the cricket season. Unfortunately, this year Kent played poorly in the Twenty20 Cup semi-final, losing to Somerset and therefore failed to qualify for the Champions League to be held in India in October. Other than playing golf, I must admit to being an armchair sports fan, although I do draw the line at synchronised swimming which looks more like synchronised drowning

Furthermore, I cant fathom out why Sky regard Poker as being a Sport that they show during the summer months. At least the Setanta platform has gone into liquidation in the UK, resulting in Sky picking up many of their sports at no extra cost to the viewer. With Cyclings Tour of Ireland starting yesterday, hopefully we will see Mark Cavendish and Lance Armstrong racing round the beautiful Irish countryside. I also enjoy spending the three weeks watching the Tour de France passing through the many towns and villages that I have visited over the years.
Then there was the final golf major, the US PGA Championship, being played last week. I believe that some bookmakers got their fingers burned by paying out after Fridays play on Tiger Woods winning (when he was subsequently beaten to the title by Y E Yang!). What with Andy Murray winning the Montreal Masters Tennis Tournament and becoming World Number 2 in the process, the Athletics World Championships this week in Berlin together with the deciding Ashes Test Match just started, it has been a long hard month stuck in front of the television!

Once again, I shall follow the rules relating to the word length as introduced by crofter. Each of my chosen link words contains at least four letters and at most eight. Stray outside this range and you will be wasting one or more of your attempts! Each of my selected words may go in front of or after my challenge word. The competition will officially close at 7.00pm on Sunday evening when my selected words will be declared, and points awarded in the usual manner. My fourth set of words to be linked should appear below at 9.00am.
