I brought a pine cone into the house and that afternoon noticed a large number of large flies in the room. I cleared them and made sure there was nothing in the room attracting them. The next day they were back - I threw the pine cone out and have had no trouble since. Is there a connection?

Obviously.

"I brought a large amount of horse manure into the kitchen and noticed a large nuber of flies. Once I removed the horse manure, the flies had gone. Is there a connection?"

Thank you for your sarcastic reply. It doesn't explain why a pine cone would attract flies. I have a large collection of different types of cones, and have never had this problem before.
Sorry.

I would assume there was some kind of food in the pine cone that the files wanted.
or the flies had hatched out from the cone...
There is a larch cone fly (native of France?). Not sure if they feed on the seeds or breed in the cone.
