I've just bought a bag of chestnuts for Christmas but I've never cooked them before.
We're having a BBQ Christmas meal. Can I cook them on a BBQ? Can they go straight on the BBQ or should they go on a tin? Do they seasoning? How long do I cook them for? Please help!
Yorkie, Have you got an open fire ? if you have that is the best place to warm them, we always cut an X into the top place them in the embers and leave for a few minutes, if you are doing them on the BBQ etc remember to do as CSG2306 says, enjoy them, Ray
My cousin and I tried this once at his house. They had a sweet chestnut tree in the garden, and we'd picked a load and decided to go fo it.
However, we didn't prick them (we were twelve, we didn't know) basically all we did was put them on a tray in the oven at some ridiculous temperature and then duly went to join the olds in the other room.
Half an hour later, several loud bangs were heard from the direction of the kitchen. All the adults looked at each other in horror and rushed off to the kitchen. John and I were about to sneak off to the garden when his mum grabbed us both and hauled us back 'to explain'.
We spent the evening cleaning the oven. Let's just say we didn't try it again.
Fantastic, we used to do these on the ledge of the gas fire as kids. This year I stabbed some and put them in the oven, several still exploded! BBQ is perfect but prick them well. When they start to go black in places they are done. Catch them as the skin blackens but before the flesh does, makes it easier to peel.
If you can't be bothered you can pierce them and put them in the microwave for a minute or so depending on how many there are ...... they don't go brown but they are still nice. Beware of the odd bad one (they smell horrible) and sometimes you might get a maggot which is a bit of a shock.
