I don't trust on-line review sites ladybird, but thanks for your reply. I should have been more clearer with the question...from personal experience.
personally, i have relied on indesits and they have never let me down!
I have a Beko 6kg one which ive had for about 2 years now , ive found it to be a good all rounder , bought expensive in the past and theyve lasted about 4-6 years ,only 2 of us here now as my sons left home
I got a beko last time for half that and it's been ace.
The site ladybird49 gave is NOT an online review site. It is the Which? site. They test all the machines themselves and collate reliability data from thousands of members.
There are several Best Buys at around £400, but only Bosch has top reliability. There are also several Don't Buys at the same price point - poor performers and poor reliability.
The most reliable brand is Miele - but much more expensive.
No idea about current machines as mine is quite old. It is an AEG and has never given any trouble.
Aawww, I thought this was going to be a good joke.
Whatever you buy, get it from John Lewis.

As well as the manufacturers one year warranty, they give a second year insurance based guarantee for no extra charge.

Ours failed just before the end of year two, and a new motor as fitted with no quibble.

I haven't investigated thoroughly, but the latest Panasonic washing machines look very interesting. Energy rating A+++, and you can apply for a 5-year parts and labour guarantee, after purchase from a 'participating outlet'. see llink...

Decided to get a John Lewis own make one. £20-00 dearer than a Boche but a 3yr warranty, as opposed to 2yrs.
I am a big fan of Zanussi. I won one in my last house. After many many years and a house move bought another.
canjt beat bosch, german reliability, but 400 is low for one of them

Most of the Bosch were around £400-00 in John Lewis, flitty.
