Hi, can anybody help us? Trying to remember the name of a large chain of men's tailors of the 1950s and 60s that was a major competitor of Burton's. We're pretty certain it was a man's name, but just can't remember.
I well remember my bil who, to put it mildly wouldn't suffer fools gladly went into Dunn's & asked a salesman if he could find him an off the peg blue pinstripe single breasted suit that would fit his required measurements.
The salesman saying certainly sir & returned with a double breasted grey pin stripe. My bil looked at him in amazement & said are you bloody deaf, the shop manager hearing the altercation came over & said '' is there a problem sir ?'' my bil said could you explain to this young man the difference between what I asked for & what he brought to me. After hearing what my bil had asked for the manager said we don't have a single breasted blue at the moment. My bil replied '' if he had said that in the first place I wouldn't have wasted 30 mins of my very valuable time'' & walked out of the shop.
John Collier was one, my OH had his wedding suit from there. I worked in the office at Hepworth the Tailor a rather more bespoke tailoring who made the England Cricket team suits, until the cheapo Chinese tailoring killed the trade.
