The customer service telephone number is less than useless, although i no longer have a amazon account they have taken £79 from my bank account
Did you owe them any money though?
Contact your bank if you can't contact Amazon. The bank should help
It appears that you have signed up for Amazon Prime at some point as have many others. janbee has given you the correct number to ring - if you demand a refund it will be made within 3 days

How can I Subscribe to amazon prime when I don't have a amazon account
Was it a Direct Debit? It could be covered by the DD guarantee too.

what is the DD guarantee and how do I access it
>How can I Subscribe to amazon prime when I don't have a amazon account.

I'm wondering if you jopined when you had an account and then didn't cancel the direct debit.
As for the DD guarantee, you could just Google it or look on your bank's website or ask them. If Amazon should have cancelled the DD the bank maybe able to recover it..

Have we gt all the facts we need here, drh? eg when did you cancel it, how did you cancel it, was the account balance clear, had you used Prime
>>>How can I Subscribe to amazon prime when I don't have a amazon account

When you bought something from Amazon there was an option for 'free one-day delivery', which you accepted. However if you'd read the small print you would have seen that it came with a free trial subscription of Amazon Prime. If you then failed to cancel that Amazon Prime subscription before the end of the trial period, you'd automatically be debited every month after that. (It's totally irrelevant as to whether you actually used Amazon Prime during the trial period. You'd ticked a box committing you to pay for Amazon Prime unless you cancelled the offer).

You're not the first!

How on earth can you have made a DD payable to a company with whom you have no account?
It's extremely unlikely that you (inadvertently) subscribed to Amazon Prime via direct debit. (To do so you'd have needed to provide the sort code and account number for your bank account). It's far more likely that you simply authorised continuing payments from your debit (or credit) card. So the Direct Debit Guarantee is NOT relevant here.
perhaps you inadvertently subscribed when you did have an account? You say you "no longer" have an account, which suggests you used to.
Have you tried contacting customer services ( 0800 496 1081) and asking them to transfer you to the accounts department?

I have answered most of those questions over the phone with customer service so I think my next port of call must be the small claims court, thank you for taking the time to help me, but now I must put it in the hands of the legal profession have a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
have you tried clicking on Buenchico's link?
You don't need to 'have an account' with Amazon to buy something from the Amazon website. You simply provide your name address and card details.

However if you select the 'One day free delivery' option (which comes with a free trial of Amazon Prime) you've ticked a box indicating that you want to take Amazon Prime and that, if you don't cancel within 30 days, you'll pay monthly for it thereafter. That effectively gives you an account with Amazon Prime at that stage.
Good luck with that. Hopefully your legal team will get all the info they need from you
