I never use scan and go or self service checkouts. We are gradually doing checkout operators out of a job and giving greedy multinationals even more money.
Quite right Bazile. Shoplifting is all too easy these days whatever way you choose to do it. They have had to put security tags on joints of meat in our local supermarket because so many people were hiding them in prams, bags and even down their pants--ugh!
I'm not sure why we should be concerned that these self scanning tills doing checkout operators out of jobs.
By loading our trolleys ourselves aren't we also doing people out of jobs- in corner shops someone used to get the stuff off the shelf for us.
It clearly pays the supermarkets to "allow" shoplifting as their prices are lower than local shops; they must factor such loses in with their final price for goods. I think most shoppers are honest and don't deliberately steal things; the dishonest ones will steal however much you try to stop them.
I use scan and go, Quicker and easier than standing in a queue waiting to offload shopping onto a conveyor only to repack it again. Occasional security check no problem, small price to pay for convenience!
A friend of mine was a Waitrose supervisor and told me that the local branch losses were between 10 and 20 thousand pounds per month...which they regarded as normal and "perfectly acceptable".
