What To Prepare For Lunch On A Date
66 Answers
Please don't judge me or ridicule me as I am genuinely seeking advice.
I am single as is the lady that I am going to be having a date with. This lady and I met at a party 15 years ago and had a "kiss and a cuddle", but that was all that happened.
Our paths occasionally crossed in the ensuing years, but neither of us were ever in a position to do anything about actually "being together".
I've "held a candle" for her for years(!) and was absolutely bowled over when she contacted me on Facebook recently. We've been exchanging a few texts, e-mails and phone calls and she now wants to come and see me on Tuesday (we both happen to be off work on that day).
Anyway, she has said that she wants to come to see me at home, but only on the proviso that I make her lunch - and no, that's not a sexual term! :)
The problem I have is that I don't know what she likes and, despite me asking her, she simply says "anything, I don't mind".
I want to make a good impression, so does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could cook/buy, etc?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Tilly, if he's been asked to make lunch (and that's quite an ask for a more-or-less first meeting), then a pub lunch won't do. He might get away with a smorgasbord of cold cuts or Indian snacks etc, with wine and strawberries and cream to follow, as long as they're in his own home; he hasn't been specifically asked to cook. But on a first date you do try hard to do what the other party wants.
You haven't given a clue as to your prowess in the kitchen which makes suggestions difficult.
I would go for either a chicken breast or a piece of fish with a sauce vierge (which can be prepped in advance), some buttered new potatoes, a few green beans and/or a green salad with dressing on the side.
For dessert cheat and buy a lemon tart and some fresh raspberries.
Hope you both have a lovely lunch whatever it may be.

I would suggest that as this is your first meeting for a long time keep it simple. I personally would love a nice green salad with fresh homemade potato salad and a lovely quiche. Not a supermarket one but homemade or bakery bought and fresh slices of crusty bread followed by Trifle or Cheesecake and a glass of wine or alcohol free wine.
Surrey guy, I know that we are familiar with similar places and I guess you are not a million miles away from me.
If you give me a clue as to where you live I might be able to recommend some good delis nearby that will give you a stress free delicious lunch, allowing you to attend to the finer details.

I would go down the quiche ,salad , buttered new pots and fresh fruit with cream route. You can buy some lovely individual quiche in waitrose. If your skills are up to it cook one the day before.
The idea is to enjoy your meeting again ,I expect you will both be a bit nervous so having it all pre prepared is a good idea.
Wine would be nice too but if she is driving have some non alcoholic drink like Schler (sorry about the spelling !)
