I have a friend in the UK whose son has got onto serious trouble with the law. He is under arrest & facing drug related & burglary charges, he is just 20.
It's come out of the blue for them & they are naturally devastated, I know him very well & keep thinking about his lot in prison awaiting trial. Will he be kept alone or be in a cell with others, what is likely to befall him?
Given prison overcrowding its highly unlikely that a remand prisoner will have a single cell. Single cells are an earned luxury (except if your put in solitary down the block)
Don't know how it works in a Y.O though.
As khandro hasn't spoken about bail, I dont think it is obvious.
If it's a high bail, the parents may only pay it if they are concerned about him being in a cell on his own, or if he'll be in a shared cell.
//And I don't believe we pay for bail in the UK.//
Its my understanding that only on occasion a surety is required.
Ive certainly never had to find anyone to put up bail for myself.
"And this is getting away from Khandro's question."
Yes, entirely your fault.
You've not added anything to this thread except hostility. Kgandro can come back to me and discuss his situation himself, you don't need to dictate the thread and discussion.
If he is on remand, he does have slightly more privileges than convicted prisoners, but Nailit is right - he is extremely unlikely to have his own cell. He'll likely be with another prisoner(s) on remand.
He is in an adult prison, his parents haven't seen him yet & will do so later in the week. After talking to them on the phone, it seems he has 3 charges against him, 2 of burglary - one serious in that the place was occupied - & one for forging doctor's prescriptions to obtain drugs.
He doesn't smoke & doesn't drink; the drugs are all mind-altering types & the fear is he has been taking them in large quantities & has damaged his mind.
What an idiot! (But we can all be landed with one of them, including me.) I am wondering why his parents had no idea of what he is up to if they fear he has been taking mind-altering drugs. They must have good cause for thinking that. He is probably being kept with others - there isn't that much room.
It sounds to me as if he might be dealt with reasonably sympathetically as long as no-one has been hurt or psychologically damaged. I don't know enough to give accurate advice - but I offer my sympathies to his parents.... and to you for catching the flak.
