Why do Rumanian surnames invariably end in :- ESCU. It must mean something pertinent, maybe "son of " or similar. Can anyone help please?

You are right, it is patronymic.

In Romanian, the endings -escu and -eanu are used, like Petrescu - son of Petre (Peter)

Is he related to Rolf Harris? Boom boom!

(Pet... Rescue....!)

Thank you octavius ,and natalie, you are trivial but simply brilliant, thank goodness for trivialities. That was worthy of Dennis Norden or Spike Milligan. pixi I haven't a clue what you're talking about, is" Imao " Rumanian? Please clarify.

hi vimto, oh sorry bout that, lmao means laughing my ass off :)

Sorry for abusing your post Vimto. I think the sun has gone to me head!
That's what I thought Vimto. However, in a recent Middlesbrough v Steaua Bucharest Uefa Cup game the Romanian side was: Carlos ,Ogararu ,Ghionea ,Goian ,Marin ,Oprita (Baciu ,81 ) ,Radoi ,Lovin ,Bostina (Nesu ,86 ) ,Nicolae Dica ,Iacob (Balan ,65 )
Subs not used Cernea,Simion,Cristocea,Cristea.

Apart from Carlos all of the others are Romanian. Has something changed since the demise of the dictator Ceausescu?

Natalie, no need to apologise I really meant it about being smart, I could add Frank Muir and Eric Sykes to those testimonial names. Thanks to you gef for the football names, are you sure the team sheet wasn't doctored by a very nervous John Motson beforehand!? Pixi I sort of see, but I still don't know what donkeys have to do with it.
