When I was a kid my mum used to to buy brown bread for my dad, we were never offered it, and for years I thought that only men could eat it. Did anybody else believe something stupid when they were a child?

If I ate carrots I'd be able to see in the dark!
My sister told me as a nipper that spaghetti was worms in tomato sauce. I never touched speghetti until I was in my twenties, and even now, I can only eat fresh, not tinned. I know it's not worms, but the memory is still there.
..I asked my dad what was the purpous of a belly button?...he told me it was for holding salt in, for when you ate chips in bed....
..oh yes, as in one of the previous answers , if you swallowed chewing gum you died... I did once and crawled between the living room wall and the sofa and waited to die... after about an hour , nobody came looking for me and I got bored waiting for the grim reaper...so I went out and played charlies angels with the twins from next door but one instead...

Old wives tales can have a footing in truth for instance :

1) Fatty cold-water fish contain healthy omega-3 fats called EPA and DHA. There is some evidence to show that poor dietary intakes or low blood levels of these omega-3 fats can result in behaviour changes, learning difficulties and depression. DHA is important for normal brain and vision development in infants.

2) And although crusts won't make your hair curl, the crust is actually a source of healthy antioxidants and it is better for us than the rest of the bread. So just a ruse by the mums to get us to eat the healthy bit.

And ermintrude35, I think your dad was right. All this tosh about umbilical cords - why in all the paintings of them do Adam and Eve have belly buttons if not to hold their salt in??

Ali

..my dad was a font of wisdom... like the time he told me when I was washing up, to make sure I filled the sieve up with pleanty of water to wash it properly.... or the time he told me never to smile at a toad else all my teeth would turn to wood....
