Is he who he says he is?
13 Answers
Hi all,
My mum has just started chatting online to a guy from America. He says he's quite a senior guy in the US Army. I'm not so sure as to me his story sounds a bit to perfect for my liking, but my mum says that she has no reason not to believe him...fair enough i suppose, i just want to look out for my mum.
My question is.....is there any way of verifying that he is who he says he is without having to ask too many questions?
At the moment i cannot find sign of him online anywhere.
I guess what i'm looking for is a list or a website of who fills senior positions in the Army for example...He says he is General **** or Captain ****. How can i check if this person even exists? Once i get that out of the way then i can check his story etc etc
thanks in advance

There is a popular scam at the moment involving nigerian scam artists who use a false photo and pretend to be US citizens, build up a relationship with a lady in the UK, and after a while asks for the lady to lend them some money for something like medical expenses for his daughter etc, or money for a ticket to the UK.
Its best not to get involved at all, but the only way to be sure that the person in the photo is the real person, is to insist on using webcam for the conversation.
If she suggests is and gets a no, you know he is hiding something...

I like Bubbles' idea - OR, without having to string he pretence out, why not log on as someone else - say, a friend of your mum's (that's how you know his addy!) - and say: "What a coincidence! You must know my American uncle - .....name....as he's stationed where you are! Get a few details from your mum first, so that you sound authentic. If he pretends to know this person, well.......
if he's a general there will be something on line about him somewhere. There aren't that many generals.

Yeah you're probably right but i don't think it's come to that just yet, my asking too many questions has put my mum on guard and i think is being very careful in regards to the information she is giving and collecting info he is saying so that if he slips up she'll know...fingers crossed he is who he says he is and my doubts will be completely unfounded.....but then again you never know!
