The story of the tourist jailed for 'smuggling' in Turkey points out that Turkey charges the prisoner/family for food. Which other countries charge?

Britain does in some cases. I know there was a conviction overturned recently, and the high profile prisoner released. And the Prison Service made a claim for rent and board from their compensation settlement. Hopefully someone can fill you in on the exact details. Also, In Thailand, I believe prisoners rely on family, firends or embassy officials to pay for their food.
well I am afraid the UK does under certain circumstances..... If you are wrongly imprisoned, for a simple reason like someone's framed you and the Legal System has not noticed, you may get compensation for the time you have spent in clink. And when they calculate the compensation, there is a charge for board and lodging. There was a recent case on appeal on this very point (2003/2004) and I cannot remember what the judgement was.
