Why Respect Authority?

Respect for authority does not always come easily to us. Do you sometimes find it difficult to respect those who have a measure of authority over you? If so, you are not alone in this struggle. We live at a time when respect for authority seems to be at an all-time low. Yet, the Bible says that we need to show respect for those who hold positions of authority over us.

Elderman,The way in which those who are practicing true religion can be identified is by their attitude toward the Bible. Jesus at all times showed respect for God’s Word. Time and again he appealed to it as the final authority on matters. (Matthew 4:4, 7, 10)
Jesus also showed respect for the Bible by living in accord with its teachings. Never did he downgrade the Bible. Rather, he condemned those who failed to teach in harmony with the Bible and who tried to weaken the force of its teachings by putting forth their own ideas.—Mark 7:9-13.
How do the churches of Christendom measure up to Christ’s example in this regard? Do they have deep respect for the Bible? Many clergymen today do not believe the Bible.
Yes, the proud person is capable of being insolent, of causing humiliation to others. He enjoys hurting someone in a cold, impersonal way and then gloats over the other person’s discomfort and ignominy. But undermining or destroying someone’s self-respect is a two-edged sword. It results in losing a friend and, more than likely, making an enemy.
How can any true Christian display such hurtful pride, since his Master commanded that ‘he should love his neighbor as himself’? (Matthew 7:12; 22:39)

Once again - The bible is a collection of myth and oral legend, edited and amended mostly for political reasons over the years. It contains homespun philosophy, mostly wrong assumptions about the universe, and is permeated with a forelock tugging, down on your knees, automatic respect/fear for the creator figure.
The repeated use of such references ( oh so similar to Elderman) does not aid your cause. I will not respect a book of fable. Neither will I respect a creator figure from the stone age, who offers no evidence of existence to his followers and demands faith - belief in the absence of evidence. Such thinking deserves pity maybe, but not respect.
Nor will i offer automatic respect to the religion, or its rituals, or its representatives.If you wish to practice your religion by yourself, or with other like minded individuals, fine, but do not try to impose such beliefs on a wider society...... One last thing you could do, if you would be so good - You should rise up en masse to condemn the miniscule few who are so fanatical, so fundamentalist in their belief that they feel the need to impose their will on everyone else by death and destruction. Rise up and tell those who are so enraged, so mortally offended by cartoons that they are willing to kill and maim, to grow up. Shout them down, give them up, and get them to stop killing in your name.

Elderman, clearly the reputation of Jesus is at stake based on his support of the Bible. The real issue then is whether the Bible is a book that any decent person should be using as a guide for life.
Maybe you could take up the baton on the debate about what constitute lies about the Bible. We were talking about this very issue here:

The story is told of the Atheist who accosted a preacher. "Do you believe in eternal life?" The preacher has no time to reply. "Well its a load of rubbish!" shouted the Atheist. That's because Jesus was never anything but a Jew. Had he been around to read the subsequent portrayals of him by the new kids on the block - the authors of the New Testament (Greek!) - I suspect he'd have found it all rather alarming, to say the least.

That's because Jesus was never anything but a Jew. Had he been around to read the subsequent portrayals of him by the new kids on the block - the authors of the New Testament (Greek!) - I suspect he'd have found it all rather alarming, to say the least.
