I understand that some Islamic countries prescribe the death penalty for blasphemy. Is this because Sharia ordains it? If you are a Muslim do you agree with this?

To answer the original question...It is simple logic, if you kill everyone that disagrees with you then you must be right.

This is not unique to Islam. Traditional western religion advocates promoted this practice not all that long ago.

The present day Society values have caused most religions to adjust their policies.

As an example, Many Catholics are now practicing the use of condom and the church's dogmatic view is leading them into decline. The Pope has now finally relented and sanctions the use in exceptional cases.
Keyplus, why do you think Sharia law would be better for the whole world when you know it discriminates against women, as in divorce proceedings for example? Surely that would be a retrograde step? Also, can you tell me if you know of any Sharia court where women sit in judgement of men?
Naomi – Once again you are trying to pick bones and would end up making this thread push and pull between your thoughts about Islam and me telling you what the difference between Sharia and what Muslims do is. For example you have talked about divorce and you do not have a blind bit of idea about Islamic Jurisdiction about it. If I have to tell you then in Islamic (Sharia) women is protected ten times more than man. But problem is that you would not agree or even think with open mind about whatever I would tell you. All I can tell you that Islam considers divorce one of the most hated but allowed thing as it breaks a bond not only between two people but two families and the most who suffer are children. Therefore Islam talks about at least six stages before final divorce and all of those six stages are to convince people involved to think about it and try talking and sorting about their problems. However at the end if things do not go well then divorce is as easy as this Hadith,

Also, a woman came to the Prophet Muhammad seeking the dissolution of her marriage, she told the Prophet that she did not have any complaints against her husband's character or manners. Her only problem was that she honestly did not like him to the extent of not being able to live with him any longer. The Prophet asked her: "Would you give him his garden (the marriage gift he had given her) back?" she said: "Yes". The Prophet then instructed the man to take back his garden and accept the dissolution of the marriage (Bukhari).
As for your other question, Islam does not forbid to have women in Sharia Court. But it is not advised for certain reason. Here is a similar question and I would expect anyone to read all of it and think about all of it. Instead of picking what would suit your need. I am 100% sure what part Naomi would pick out of this link.

Keyplus, //For example you have talked about divorce and you do not have a blind bit of idea about Islamic Jurisdiction about it.//

I don’t? Well, I’ve seen the separate rules that apply to men and to women – and I’ve seen the forms that each has to complete in order to apply for a divorce under Sharia law – and they aren’t the same either. There’s no doubt it’s considerably easier for a man to obtain a divorce than it is for a woman.

//Islam does not forbid to have women in Sharia Court. But it is not advised for certain reason.//

And what reason would that be – or shall I just stick to the outrageous justifications given in your link? That tripe is a complete and utter insult to women everywhere and demonstrates quite graphically Islam’s appalling discriminatory and misogynistic practices. And you advise the reader to think about it? There's nothing for any intelligent person to think about. The truth is staring them in the face! Do you really think that anyone with any sense is going to read that and agree with it? Why you posted it is quite beyond me because you do Islam no favours at all – but I’m very pleased you did. Thank you.

I’m going to post your link on the Sexual Discrimination thread in R&S – just to show Sith, who claims there is no sexual discrimination within Islam, just how non-discriminatory it really is. Shameful!
>>7 – The position of judge requires a high level of intelligence, insight and reason, and women have less of these qualities than men, and they have little experience in the affairs of life and disputes.<<

and that is not sexist?

You lot are on a different planet!!
-- answer removed --
Ratter – You did exactly what I expected and mentioned above.
Ratter – what is the percentage of women among Nobel prise winners? How many famous scientists are women? God has created men and women for different purposes at the different phases of life. You can try helping Naomi with the questions I have given her in the following line, although I am not expecting much response from her.

Fender – I have heard all that before, perhaps you need to read my posts on this link again. That just shows me frustration of the people who do not see Muslims showing them some sort of mirror.

Naomi – You are so intelligent and full of knowledge, could you get me some statistics of google (otherwise I would do that myself no doubt). I am not asking about the world statistics, not even Europe, only UK would do or even just England.
1 – Population and percentage of men and women.
2 – Judges in the country and percentage among them for men and women.
3 – Prime ministers to date and percentage of men and women.
4 – Army personnel and percentage of men and women.
5 – Police and percentage of men and women.
6 - Police commissioners and percentage of men and women.
7 – Statistics about top jobs and percentage of men and women.

I can go on and on but this should be enough.

Finally you post my links wherever you do wish. And say that I am not doing any favour to Islam as many time as you wish because that only tells me that I am saying something that you do not like. So it must be damaging your agenda and therefore be good. Islam believes that women are men are different. There is no question about being equal or not. Men are better at certain things and women at other. And that is the way it is. Children are always better looked after by mother and not a child minder. I don’t save news archives otherwise we all have heard about reasons behind broken families and children out of control. One main reason is always where both parents are busy earning money. If still not understood ( I have no doubt, it is) then why do you discriminate women in sports. Why not have man and women heavy weight boxing competition, why have two 100 m race in Olympic, why not let them run together. Why board women first onto the emergency boats when Titanic was sinking. I am sure you would not like to be treated same as men if you were at titanic.
We had the Titanic thread a little while ago and most women if I recall couldn't see a reason why they should be evacuated first, so sorry keyplus you seem to have shot yourself in the foot slightly there- these women live by the sword and die by the sword of being equal to men and quite right too, they didn't want to go first.

Did I get the quote right?
http://www.almaz.com/nobel/women.html

There you go Keyplus- there's a few including Marie Curie who won it just two years after it was launched. Not terribly sure what this is supposed to prove though, other than women are obviously equal to men.
keyplus, the reason there is an imbalance of women in all those professions is that up until fairly recent history the posts were held by men. That has been women's lot in Britain in recent years, to get equality, in law, to have a decent education, to become their own bosses, own businesses, which many now do, and indeed get to the top jobs in all professions. it has taken some time because men in power do not necessarily like relinquishing those powers to anyone let alone women. Women didn't get the full vote until 1928, so no voting rights means no rights, to change the status quo. There is an awful lot more that one could add, but i don't see why i should have to give you or anyone a history lesson on Britain and it's people, suffice to say that there have been many many notable women throughout our history, not least Elizabeth Garret Anderson, Elizabeth Fry, Queen Elizabeth 1, and 2nd, Queen Victoria, Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole, The Pankhursts, Vera Brittain, Vita sackville West, Julia Margaret Cameron, and so many more. But we wouldn't want to dent your superior knowledge of life in Britain and it's history.
I hope one day that Sharia law is banned in Britain, however seeing how spineless our politicians are that will probably never happen
Nox – Still Men are more than females by long distance. Why? When overall female population of the world or even in majority of the countries is lot more than that of male?

And about your Titanic and live by sword. I will wait when these same women are in the situation. It is very easy to say here and there but real thing comes out when actual time comes.

Vetuste – Muslim golden era was long gone before the Nobel prize started a century ago. But at their time Muslims have contributed a lot in almost every field of life that could have easily got them nominated at least. But still Muslims do have a fair share, and here is the list. But in reality this question is not about Muslims or non-Muslims.

Any way I would wait till Naomi would answer my question and give me the details of women on the basis of population ratio and their share in the sectors I gave above. But for the time being here is a news from yesterday’s paper.

http://www.dailymail....tml?ito=feeds-newsxml

And the simple reason here is that mothers are at work. Where the best thing a mother can do for her child as well as for society is that she should look after and bring her children and should leave earning to father.

Em10 – My above point goes to you as well, as this is at a time when according to you because of early days there are not enough women in jobs. You make it 50/50 and then see what happens to the society. It is easy calling someone anti women or sexist but it is very difficult to ignore ground realities. And by the way don't panic, I can't see Sharia law coming to Britain in your life time.
Vetuste - Sorry forgot this,

Keyplus, once again you are employing stealth tactics to lead the discussion off course. The fact is your link states quite categorically that all women are INTELLECTUALLY inferior to any man – and that simply isn’t true.
Keyplus, Sharia Law is already here, so it's hardly something that won't happen in my lifetime. And the threat posed by the spread of Islam is already cause for concern, not just in Britain. Where many young Muslims, men and women feel disengaged from society in Britain, that can and i am sure will lead to more segregation, split along ethnic, cultural lines. You already see in in boroughs like Tower Hamlets, and places like Oldham Lancs, Luton in Beds, and endless other areas across the country.
Head in the sand for some on here, as well as our political leaders, who don't see the bigger picture, as they are too secure in their ivory towers to notice what is happening in modern Britain.

Thanks for the link, Keyplus. I encourage others to read it. I'm surprised you think it disproves my point.
Forget Arafat and Sadat, let's look at two:
Shirin Ebadi – Iranian Human Rights Activist (2003). The first and only Iranian to receive a Nobel Prize. She was also the first Muslim woman to receive such an honor.[3][10]The 2003 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Ebadi “for her efforts for democracy and human rights. She has focused especially on the struggle for the rights of women and children”.
Tawakel Karman – Human rights defender based in Yemen. A prominent leader in the Arab Spring (2011). The first Arab woman and first and only Yemeni to receive a Nobel Prize. She is also the youngest Nobel Peace Laureate .[19][20][21] The 2011 Nobel Peace Prize was jointly given to Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Karman “for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women’s rights to full participation in peace-building work”.
I'm delighted that you support these two courageous women. All the more praiseworthy given their innate disadvantages.
1,000,000,000 Muslims.
6 Nobel peace prizes (assuming that the two women count), two for literature, one for physics and one for chemistry (he lives in America).
We've come a long way since Averroes and Avicenna, Keyplus. You do the math.
Anyway, we seem to have gone well off piste with talk of science and women. There is another thread about sexual discrimination, isn't there?
My question asked about penalties for blasphemy. You replied that neither the Koran nor Sharia prescribe death, although you didn't reply to a questioner who asked what penalities (if any) are prescribed. The fact that some Muslim countries prescribe death as the punishment for blasphemy you ascribe to false interpretations of the Koran/Haddith/incomplete implementation of Sharia. So you've given me a clear answer to my first question, but left me to infer an answer to the second. You ARE against such laws, aren't you, including the fatwah issued against Rushdie?
i wasnt aware that Sharia prescribed the death penalty for blashpheming... have you got a link vetuste? saves me raking through books cos im busy...thanks
Naomi - Can you answer my questions? I did not ask for the world, not for Europe and not even for UK but only England. There are no Islamic laws here, no one believes that women are less intelligent than men, No one is pushing women back here then why there are not enough women (proportionately) in the fields I mentioned? So that’s one question if you could answer.

And then assuming that the proportion of women is not even ten percent but still few people are saying (as in my link above) that families at large and kids in common are suffering because they are not getting enough help (or training in other words) at home presumably due to both parents working. So my other question to you is that if a society is already suffering when only (perhaps) 10% mothers are not present then what would happen if it goes to say 50/50. I know you are not good at equations but do have a go please.

Vetuste – I thought I had given you’re the answer. But here it is again. I am against any law (in Islamic countries) that is not according to Sharia. As for Rushdie, yes I am again against a fatwa because it is against Sharia for letting people take law (killing someone in this matter) into their own hand.
