Sharing a black bin

This is a bit silly but here goes. I live on my own and recycle my cans etc. in the blue bin which isn't a problem, but the amount of rubbish I get (tea bags and chip paper etc.) is so small it doesn't even fill a carrier bag in two weeks, so what I do is that I wait while the neighbours put their bin out and then I put my carrier bag in one of their bins.
The trouble is my neighbours don't like it and sometimes I come out of my front door to find a pile of rubbish on my doorstep.
My questions are these
1. Am I doing wrong? I admit I haven't asked them.
2. Am I committing an offence?
3. Are my neighbours committing an offence by littering. As I understand it bins are there to have rubbish put into them, but to take rubbish out and put it by someone's front door surely has to be an offence. They even put rubbish on my step that is not mine.
I feel I would like to stand my ground and I had an enormous row with them yesterday because two of them like to think they own the drive and I feel that if I give into them, my life won't be worth living.
The bin men simply tip the rubbish out of one bin into another anyway and then simply empty the one bin into the back of the lorry.
What course of action do you think I should take, I could use my bin but it seems so silly and I am 68 years of age but fairly fit. Answers appreciated.
Thanks.

0lly, if you want to stand your ground, that's up to you.
Personally I wouldn't care if someone put their one wee bag of rubbish in my bin - but I'm not your neighbour.
It just seems to me that you are getting rather het up about this - the easiest solution in my (and other's) opinion would be to just use your own bin.
But as I said earlier, it appears that...

Well, there you go Olly, your neighbours begrudge you a little space in their bin. And as you can see, most of the good people on here are very possessive of the empty space in their own bins. But you have to appreciate people today cling tenaciously to every- thing they 'own'.
Council micro-chips in bins. Who'd of thought,eh.
Some begrudge your badge and some even begrudge you posting.
It's becoming a grudgy little world.
Anyway, you seem like a good old cove to me. Chat to you later.

Thanks for the laughs some have given me, and no, I'm not a troll, the bin issue was the easiest to post about. Watching him poking about in everyone's bins when they are lined up on the pavement on bin day is more than just sad and on a public forum I cannot tell you about his attitude towards children, cats and his neighbour on the other-side of him, the bin issue was something I felt I could post about and I just wanted to be sure of my legal position because if nobody stands up to him life on the drive isn't going to be worth living. I didn't intend the thread going this far but often there is more below the surface than can be seen on the top.
Thanks everyone.
Thanks everyone.
olly, you are being ridiculous.
you are not obliged to put your bin out every single collection day ... just let it fill up and put it out every 6-8 weeks.
you have caused this trouble - and you know it - you are the one in the wrong, so how you can think you have any rights to 'stand your ground' is beyond me!
how do you know that they do not come out just after you with a load more trash only to find the bit of space that was left is now full of your stuff - i know many people rush out with a last bit of trash just before the binmen come.
i too would be annoyed at you and would dump your rubbish on your step iif i kept finding i had no room left in the bin for me.
I would take that as the actions of a sneak and give you back your trash just on principle.
as for cutting the hedges - thats up to you - no-one asked or expected you to - you just did it and as such you cant expect people to follow suit and rush to help you.
you need to stop going round just assuming and expecting people to be just like you - id have thought at 68 youd have learnt that by now.
i understand you would liike neigbourliness - but you havent exactly been neighbourly yourself have you? using their bins without permission, and by now actually seeking some kind of legal action over them giving you back YOUR garbage!!

Can't argue with joko: I have got to the point, because I live in a block of sheltered housing, of taking any empty alcohol bottles into the centre of town to dump them, as we have certain nosy neighbours who like nothing better than having a good nosy in the recycle bin to see who is drinking what. I know you will tell me it's none of their business, but why should I make their sad day?
