If in a police statement someone uses the word "basically" about 4 times in one sentence, starting almost every sentence with "basically" is that a sign they are being untruthful?

Basically, no.
Hardly, no. It means they are vocabulary challenged.
Words such as basically, actually, however, etc are over used by many people. It's a sign of nothing more than a poor use of the english language.
Same as "really, really"..."you know what I mean?" etc.
It's reminded me of those Monty Python sketches featuring Major Well-Basically!
You can normally tell when a Policeman is lying, especially in Court, as you can see his lips move.
I read once that, in general, people will look down and to their left if lying, and will look up and to their right if they are not when answering a question.

My son is a serving officer in the Metropolitan police and I find your glib, but all too trendy ejaculated comments deeply offensive to me and my family.

Let me know who you are and where you live so that next time my wife is watching her son live on TV going into the flames of the London riots he won't be risking his, bravery commended life, on your behalf.
No

Think plebgate - the fella who wasnt there hasnt accepted he was er lying.

Colm, a splendid reply - sadly there are a few who miss the joke section and click on the wrong topic heading.

Well done to your Son and the majority of good police officers.
.

doctors have to accept Shipman zeroed hundreds of patients
and the police have to accept there are corrupt officers...

and sometimes more than one ... Didnt jack fire the whole of Heathrow (Thiefrow) police in 1964 ? and Dear disband the west mids serious crime squad ( or fraud squad or vice squad )

It is better to say yes it exists - but is it a big problem than just to deny

In Shipman terms every doctor with an excess mortality
[ ha they must be killing their patients ! their colleagues in regulation triumphantly chortled ] and every one was found to have an old people's home on his books.
Currently they are worried about Doctors blowing up hospitals - um yeah.....
Colm - I have seen both a doctor and solicitor perjure themselves in court - they had destroyed evidence they thought only they knew about .....

and just about nothing surprises me now .....

Remember poor Lord Denning saying - but if they let the irish terrorists out, it means that they think hundreds of police have deliberately lied .....

Steve, of course I've had a drink, it's Saturday night/Sunday morning so why not? However, because of that, was my response somehow affected by what I believed to be an unfair generalisation concerning the police force in which we are proud our son serves?

Yes others point out that there are 'bad apples' in every trade and profession. I merely pointed out that those who serve on the front line that separates your 'civil society' from those who would harm if not destroy you if they could, should not be taken for granted and maligned in the way the poster I was responding to did.

Unfortunately, not to many people join the police force nowadays with the altruistic notion of making society a better place, The "Dixon's of Dock Green" are long gone. Anyone joining the police force today wants the power, the belt with the Glock, the mace, the handcuffs, the heavy-duty flash light that serves as a truncheon. And they get to shave their heads and wear black gloves and cruise around in cars with big flashing lights and sirens...Ironically, when I was much younger, I respected the police...Now that I am much older and see their, in general, abuse of their position I have no toleration for them whatsoever!
Stewey,
Another generalisation conditioned by the media driven impulse to hate the police.

Again let me know where you live and maybe I could arrange for your house to be disabused of the malignant presence of the police. I trust you will be able to make your own arrangements for the safety and security of yourself, your family, and your property.

Funny isn't it that you have to pay the BBC TV Licence whether you watch their anti-police propaganda like the present series of Silent Witness or not. But, having been induced into a state of institutionalised mistrust of either the BBC, the police or both you still have to pay your dues either way.

I would rather give my TV licence money to the RSPCA than the BBC for the way they are endangering my son's life but I have no option.

I imagine you feel the same way too- surely if you opted out of a police force that you hold in such contempt such that you would be happy to make your own arrangements for the defence of yourself and your family you should be entitled to a discount on your council tax payments, if you pay them of course.
Colmc54...I meant no offence to you son. It was a light hearted remark but one with some truth in it. The Police in Britain are fast losing all credibility because so many of them have lied. We have the new Hillsborough Inquests coming up soon and dozens of Policemen are going to have to explain why they altered their statements and lied to the original inquest. Is your son and your family proud of this ?
Sadly there have been several officers convicted of rape and sexual abuse in recent times....I ,like many , do not have the same trust or respect for the police...notwithstanding one can buy all manner of contraband and ill gotten goods from police in a social environment ....I speak from personal experience !!!
Colnc54 you do not help your cause (or the police) by posting comments like this, the 2nd paragraph of your 04.51 post:
"Again let me know where you live and maybe I could arrange for your house to be disabused of the malignant presence of the police. I trust you will be able to make your own arrangements for the safety and security of yourself, your family, and your property. "
I sincerely hope this was hyperbole and that relatives of serving police officers are not in a position to carry out such a threat.
